Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim heaped praise on Mason Mount after his impressive performance in their 4-1 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers. He hailed his quality and effort and said that he leads by example.
The Red Devils faced Wolves at the Molineux Stadium in the Premier League on Monday, December 8. Mason Mount put in an impressive performance, scoring a goal, in his 85 minutes on the pitch. He attempted three shots, completed 27/30 passes, made five recoveries, and won 3/15 duels (via SofaScore).
After the game, Ruben Amorim heaped praise on the Manchester United midfielder, saying (h/t Manchester World):
"I think also the way we play, if you compare the past that he had in Chelsea, which Chelsea is the same, and then he has a great quality. He can defend, he can attack, is really the quality that when he touched the ball is really good."
"So it's not a surprise for me, but of course, we need to take care of him. Sometimes you need to protect them in training in games, but when you build, that is going to happen the same, the same thing with Luke Shaw. So he's going to build that and it's going to be really important for our club," he added.
When asked if Mount is one of the leaders in the squad, Amorim said:
"Yeah, he’s a different type of leader. It's not like Licha [Lisandro Martinez], for example. It's a guy that leads by the example. It doesn't matter the situation. Mason Mount is always the same thing, training, talking, dealing with people around Carrington. That is not easy. So he’s a very, very good player."
Meanwhile, with the win, Manchester United are sixth in the Premier League standings, one point behind fourth-placed Crystal Palace.
Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim opens up on managing Mason Mount's minutes
Manchester United signed Mason Mount from Chelsea for a reported fee of £60 million in 2023. However, he's suffered multiple injuries since then, missing over 50 games for the club. He's been available this season, but has started just seven games across competitions.
After the win over Wolves, Ruben Amorim was asked why Mount has started fewer games, and he answered:
"No, sometimes it's the tactical issue. When you play a striker and sometimes Cunha is going to that position or sometimes it's also, we need to protect Mason Mount. We need to build the same thing that we did with Luke last year. We are doing with Mason taking care of him."
Mount has scored seven goals and provided two assists in 59 games for Manchester United. He could expect to get more minutes when Bryan Mbeumo and Amad Diallo depart for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
