Manchester United talent Kobbie Mainoo's Old Trafford future hangs in the balance after dramatically falling from grace under Ruben Amorim.

The England international had a loan bid knocked back during the summer window but could be heading for the exit door as the January transfer period looms. While Amorim's squad has shown signs of improvement following a woeful start to the Premier League campaign, including a 4-1 win against Wolves at Molineux last night, one midfielder remains out in the cold.

Despite previously appearing destined for stardom at the Theatre of Dreams and netting a crucial FA Cup-winning strike just over 12 months ago, the 20 year old appears surplus to requirements under the current boss. Speculation continues to swirl around a potential United departure, though there's been a fresh twist concerning one of his rumoured destinations. Here's the latest news from Old Trafford.

Kobbie Mainoo transfer twist

Mainoo appeared destined for a temporary switch away from Manchester during the summer transfer window, only for the club to veto any departure, reports the Mirror.

Fresh reports indicate he could be heading elsewhere come January after remaining frozen out of Amorim's thinking, with Italian outfit Napoli emerging as a potential option.

Following the successful moves of Scott McTominay and Rasmus Hojlund from Old Trafford to Naples, reports suggested the Serie A club had registered their interest in the young star.

However, Tutto Mercato now claims Napoli are "on the fence" about Mainoo and have identified West Ham's Soungoutou Magassa as an alternative target.

Roma and Italy star Lorenzo Pellegrini is also reportedly on the club's radar, should they decide to halt their pursuit of the promising Mainoo.

Club captain Bruno Fernandes remains a key figure in Amorim's squad this season, having started every match, with his latest man of the match performance versus Wolves, where he scored a brace and registered an assist.

Since his transfer from Sporting CP in January 2020, the Portuguese international has been a reliable force in United's midfield. His dedication and contributions on the pitch have not gone unnoticed.

On the United club website, there's a section dedicated to player profiles deemed as 'legends'. This includes football greats like Ryan Giggs, Wayne Rooney, Paul Scholes and many more.

Now, Fernandes finds his name listed alongside these icons, as well as current player Marcus Rashford, who is currently on loan.

The 31-year-old's profile features a biography of his time at the club so far, presented with an appropriately gold-trimmed design.
