Ruben Amorim lauded Mason Mount for his performance during Manchester United's triumph over Wolves. The Red Devils, who were expected to dominate the match against the Premier League's tail-enders, drew first blood in the 25th minute courtesy of Bruno Fernandes capitalising on some farcical defending.
Wolves, however, managed to level the score by half-time with a goal from Jean-Ricner Bellegarde, breaking their five-game goal drought. Despite the strike, they failed to maintain momentum in the second half. United exploited the space given in the final third, netting three more goals via Mount, Bryan Mbeumo and a Fernandes penalty.
When questioned about Mount's consistent high-level performances, Amorim responded: "I think also the way we play, if you compare the past that he had in Chelsea, which Chelsea is the same, then he has a great quality."
Amorim further praised Mount's versatility as he explained: "He can defend, he can attack, is really the quality that when he touched the ball is really good. So it's not a surprise for me, but of course, we need to take care of him. Sometimes you need to protect them in training in games, but when you build, that is going to happen the same, the same thing with Luke Shaw. So he's going to build that and it's going to be really important for our club."
Discussing Mount's leadership style, Amorim stated: "He's a different type of leader. It's not like Licha (Lisandro Martinez), for example. It's a guy that leads by the example. It doesn't matter the situation.
"Mason Mount is always the same thing, training, talking, dealing with people around Carrington. That is not easy. So he's a very, very good player."
Amorim also shed light on why Mount hasn't started every game as he added: "Sometimes it's the tactical issue. When you play a striker and sometimes [Matheus] Cunha is going to that position or sometimes it's also we need to protect Mason Mount."
Monday’s result moved United up to sixth in the Premier League table, with the Red Devils just one point behind fourth-place Crystal Palace.
The 13-time Premier League champions finally appear to have turned a corner under Amorim and have lost just once in their last nine league matches.
United will be aiming to kick on over the festive period and welcome Bournemouth to Old Trafford next Monday. Amorim’s men then travel to the west Midlands to take on Aston Villa six days later before hosting Newcastle on Boxing.
Wolves then visit Old Trafford on Tuesday, December 30, with United due to begin 2026 with a trip to Leeds on Sunday, January 4.
