Ruben Amorim says Man Utd have a ‘different type of leader’ who does things that are ‘not easy’

Manchester United finally beat a team that they were supposed to beat, and handsomely, so Ruben Amorim was delighted in confirming the team’s new leader after the game.

Winless Wolves actually played like it against Man Utd, as even an equaliser at 1-1 could not trigger a collapse from Ruben Amorim’s side as they ran out 4-1 winners.

The win puts them sixth in the table, and while the congested table can sometimes drag the narratives to where they shouldn’t be, United have a chance to build momentum.

To do so, they will need their newest leader to step up and keep doing things that are ‘not easy’, according to Ruben Amorim.

Ruben Amorim coins Mason Mount as a leader at Man Utd

A lack of leaders was a major complaint from the Man Utd manager last season, which is why strong personalities like Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo were added to the side.

Amorim already has a leadership group at Old Trafford, but even beyond that, this season has seen the likes of Matthijs de Ligt emerge as leaders.

Man Utd fans can now count Mason Mount among those leaders, even though Amorim said he’s a different type of leader compared to someone like Lisandro Martinez.

He said: “[Mount] is a different type of leader, not similar to Lisandro Martinez, for example. He’s a guy who leads by example. The situation doesn’t matter. Mount is always the same. Training, talking, and dealing with people around Carrington. That’s not easy.”

Amorim’s praise for Mount is nothing new, since he has been his favourite from day one at Carrington, but this is the first time he’s championed his leadership credentials.

It’s a natural next step forward for a player who is just starting to stay fit and add end product to his game.

Mount’s importance is about to increase further

It speaks volumes about Mount’s importance to this team that, despite Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha’s arrival, he remains a part of United’s strongest XI.

His understanding of the tactical demands of the system, as well as his ability to press effectively, combined with his newfound end product, make him undroppable.

That importance to the team is about to increase further, because Amorim will soon not be in a position to “protect” him either.

As Amad and Bryan Mbeumo leave for AFCON, along with Noussair Mazraoui, the attacking ranks will be stretched further.

Benjamin Sesko’s return should ease the burden a little, but Mount will be the first name on the teamsheet when the attacking duo leaves.

And thus, the next step for Mount will begin. He has stayed fit and added end product to his game.

Now he needs to do it while playing regularly and not warranting his minutes being managed in an effort to save him from breaking down.
