Mason Mount reaffirmed his importance to Ruben Amorim and Man Utd, but the praise for him by the manager just showed that Kobbie Mainoo won’t have a future at the club under him.
Man Utd fans were treated to four goals and a win against a hapless Wolves side that were there for the taking in a 4-1 victory.
Mason Mount, even beyond his goal, was everywhere in the second half and personified the best of Ruben Amorim’s system.
Amorim praised Mount after the game, and a key point he said showed why Kobbie Mainoo will find it difficult to establish himself at Old Trafford under the current Man Utd manager.

Ruben Amorim on Mason Mount and contrast to Kobbie Mainoo
Firstly, it should be noted that Amorim has never waited for a reason to praise Mount, as he was waxing lyrical about him from the moment he arrived.
However, the same can be said for Mainoo when United said it was the “start of something special” when Amorim and Mainoo first met.
The trajectories of these two players have gone in separate directions since then, and listening to Amorim’s latest praise for Mount, the picture is getting clearer.

After the 4-1 win against Wolves, Amorim called Mount a leader, but more than that, praised his ability to make a difference while taking only a few touches.
Mount’s ability to keep the play moving at high speed aligns with Amorim’s philosophy, and it stands in stark contrast with his assessment of Mainoo.
Amorim has previously said about Mainoo that he is used to “calm the game down” by taking touches and then going away.
He urged Mainoo to quicken the tempo of the game, which translates to the player taking too much time on the ball/touches before releasing it.
That is in direct contrast to Mount’s trait he likes the most, which is his ability to take fewer touches and keep the game moving quickly.
Amorim can use Mainoo’s strengths
Mount and Mainoo are different players, but it is the manager’s job to make use of different profiles in his squad to keep the opponent guessing.

Against low blocks, for example, a ball circulator like Mainoo is needed, who can beat a man off the dribble and carry the ball forward himself.
In those games, playing at 100 MPH benefits nobody except the opposite team, because they will just keep repelling the attacks by sitting in their box.
Instead of asking Mainoo to speed up his game like Mount, Amorim should try to get United to control games by using Mainoo as the orchestrator.
That will diversify United’s attack instead of making every game a battle of intensity, aggression, second balls, transitions, and set-pieces.
