'He's trusting me a lot' - Manchester United teenager lifts lid on unexpected role under Ruben Amorim

Wolves 1-4 Manchester United match highlights and review

The Man Utd youngster started again as they defeated Wolves in the Premier League on Monday night.

The 19-year-old was handed a shock first start of the season last week when he replaced the injured Matthijs De Ligt in the starting line up against West Ham. Heaven struggled with the intensity of the match and was substituted at half-time after he had picked up a yellow card.

There would have been few complaints had Heaven dropped out of the side to face Wolves on Monday night, but Amorim kept his faith in the teenager and named him in his back three once again. The former Arsenal centre-back produced a much-improved performance at Molineux and didn't look out of place in the heart of the United defence.

Heaven thanks Amorim for United trust

Ayden Heaven has made 11 senior appearances for Manchester United since he joined from Arsenal in the January transfer window and could prove to be a bargain buy. United paid a compensation fee in the region of £1.5 million for the teenage defender and look to have secured an excellent young talent.

Heaven was initially expected to leave on loan next month, but could remain at the club for the rest of the season amid injury to both Matthijs De Ligt and Harry Maguire. His performance against Wolves will do his first-team chances no harm, and after the match, he thanked Amorim for the trust shown in him.

"There's so many great defenders at this club that he's trusting you to be at the middle of that defence," Heaven told reporters. "He’s trusting me a lot. I feel like I’m working hard every day in training and I’m showing he can trust me in the games that I’m playing."

Heaven started alongside makeshift centre-backs Noussair Mazraoui and Luke Shaw against Wolves and is learning a lot from the experience they both bring to the backline. He added: "I’m enjoying it because knowing you have that experience around you, you are not scared to go on the front foot and not scared of what you leave behind either. They’re always there when I need them."

It has been a whirlwind calendar year for Heaven since he swapped North London for Manchester, but he is not getting carried away just yet. "I thought I was a good player I knew that I first had to gain the trust of the manager and slowly I know I’m doing that. Yeah, I feel like I’m doing well at the moment, but I’ve just got to keep working."

"We’ve just got to do what we did today in every game. I don’t think anyone can stop us when we play like this. We want to win as many games as possible. Hopefully we can be in Europe next season, which I think we'll do. That's where Manchester United belong, so feel like we can just continue how we did today and we’ll be back when we belong."
