Mason Mount stakes a claim for England's World Cup squad as Tuchel 'knows what he can do'

National World Top Stories Update Tuesday 9 December, 2025

Over the past couple of seasons, you could be forgiven for forgetting about Mason Mount’s existence.

Having joined Manchester United from Chelsea in July 2023 for around £60m, he arrived at Old Trafford just as the club’s - and his - fortunes went downhill.

Two years riddled with injuries, while Man United flailed under Erik ten Hag and then Ruben Amorim, proved to be a major setback for the English midfielder.

But the 26-year-old has forced his way back into the frame this season, with three Premier League goals to his name; most recently a stellar volley against Wolves on Monday, December 8 as Man United beat the relegation scrappers 4-1.

Not only has this garnered praise from pundits, but it has thrust him into the conversation from Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for the World Cup next year.

Mount has not featured for England once since Tuchel took charge, therefore not playing in any of the World Cup qualifying matches.

But speaking on TalkSport, former Aston Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor says Mount is now almost certainly on Tuchel’s radar.

He said: “If he can get a run of games and perform like he did last night, Thomas Tuchel will be aware of Mason Mount. He'll know what he can do and what he did at Chelsea.

“I thought last night his passing was spot on. His finish from [Bruno] Fernandes - he's got a great ball in behind. He just needs a run of games now.

“Can you keep playing and stay in the side, then why not?”

It comes after Mount enjoyed a wholesome conversation with compatriot James Maddison on Sky Sports last night, following the former’s heroics against Wolves.

Maddison said: “No question from me, mate. I couldn’t think of one - just wanted to say I thought you were brilliant tonight.

“You look like you’re back to your firing best.

“It’s a pleasure to see you playing like that, mate, and having a smile on your face after a tough period out. Buzzing for you, mate.”

Mount replied: “I really appreciate that, mate. It’s obviously good to be back out.

“I’m feeling good at the moment. We love being on the pitch and being able to create chances and be on the ball. I’m looking forward to seeing when you’re back, mate.”
