Six Things We Learned From Wolves’ 4–1 Collapse Against Manchester United

Always Wolves

Always Wolves

1. Fan discontent is strong with an active demonstration:

The sight of a huge crowd in front of the Billy Wright Stand demonstrating the current feeling towards the owners Fosun International by the Fans.

They boycotted the first 15 minutes of the match to demonstrate their dissatisfaction with the state of the Club. Fosuns reported reply was that the situation was down to the football levels. This implied that the problems don’t relate to their running of the Club. However their self sustaining model of ownership means that players are sold every year to provide funds to finance the club. Any player signings have to come from within these funds.

Wolves are bottom of the league without a win this season after 14 games. The team is a shadow of a few years ago!

2. The game was like men versus boys:

Wolves started the game at a fast pace. But it soon became obvious that there was a huge gap in skills and quality. United played as a unit. Each of their players knew where to play a pass, when to make a run into space. Wolves were chasing shadows.

Wolves did try and play with more bite. But where United closed Wolves down by pressing. Wolves gave away too many fouls. The players still didn’t pose any threats to United’s goal. United found space all over the pitch and found passing a bit like a training session at times. The gulf in abilities was plain to see. It wasn’t long before Wolves pressed the self destruction button. Andre found himself facing his own goal on the halfway line and he gave the ball away. It ended up in the goal from Fernandes.

Wolves just couldn’t resist shooting themselves in the foot.

3. Wolves score their first goal since October:

Against all the odds Wolves began to show a bit of fight. Jean Bellegarde was playing out of his skin. It was him that volleyed the ball through a crowd of players just before half-time to level the scores. All of a sudden players huddled and you wondered what the second half would bring.

4, Wolves players were not all on the same bus:

I must confess I wondered what team would come out after Rob Edwards team talk. But as the game went on United’s passing and movement went up a level. But Wolves players were stuck in first gear. They lacked the ability to play in a line in defence keeping United’s players onside. Agbadou repeatedly got caught as last man. The score could have been doubled but for Sam Johnstones heroics.

The basic rule in defence is one out all out! But Wolves couldn’t get that right all game. This allowed United to attack at will. They could and should have scored more than the four goals they got.

5, Relegation just about confirmed tonight:

Maths don’t come into the equation after tonight’s game. Wolves are 13 points adrift of fourth bottom place. But with bogey side Brentford at home plus Arsenal and Liverpool away before New Year. Wolves are on course for a record low points score.

As the camera scanned around Molineux just before the last few minutes some fans had turned their backs on the game or already left, they’d seen enough.

6. Changes are needed:

There comes a point when a players performance cannot be excused. Jorgen Strand Larsen is a shadow of last seasons player. His 14 goals seem light years away. His performance and visual appearance show a player who doesn’t seem to be at the races. He must be dropped next game.

Other players who should be dropped are, Arias, Wolfe, incapable of crossing the ball unless its on the ground.

It’s time to bring in Mane, Arkodare, Fer Lopez who tried to get the ball moving when he came on and Hugo Bueno.

The players are playing for next seasons contract in the Championship. I can’t even see the January Transfer window helping this team. Rob Edwards has a mammoth task that just keeps getting bigger everytime the players go onto the pitch!

Another pasting, did we expect anything different?
