‘Totally agree’… Rio Ferdinand‘surprised’after what Ruben Amorim did in Man Utd win vs Wolves

Rio Ferdinand admitted that he expected Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim to make one major call in the 4-1 thumping of Wolves on Monday evening.

Bruno Fernandes netted the Red Devils’ opener in the first half at the Molineux before Wolves responded in injury time through midfielder Jean-Ricner Bellegarde.

However, Ruben Amorim watched on from the Molineux dugout as Manchester United hit back at Wolves early in the second half of the Premier League clash.

Bryan Mbeumo put the Red Devils back into the lead only six minutes into the second half before Mason Mount added his name to the scoreline in the match.

Bruno Fernandes, who picked up an assist for Mason Mount, ensured that United sealed all three Premier League points after he converted from the spot-kick.

United manager Ruben Amorim used all five of the substitutions available to him in the match, but the Portuguese coach did not turn to the youth academy talent.

Shea Lacey has been in the United first-team squad for the last four Premier League fixtures and has been an unused substitute on each occasion under Amorim.

Speaking on Rio Ferdinand Presents, co-host Stephen Howson said: “You have Shea Lacey on the bench, you’re about to lose forwards to AFCON [Africa Cup of Nations], United fans back and enjoy seeing any youth player given opportunities.

“You could have bought some goodwill if you gave Shea Lacey 10 minutes last night, we’re not losing that game.”

Rio Ferdinand said that even he was “surprised” that the 18-year-old United winger did not make his Premier League debut when the Red Devils were leading Wolves.

“Yeah, I was surprised, when you go a few goals up like we did, I’m surprised he [Lacey] didn’t get on the pitch,” he responded to Stephen Howson.

“I totally agree with you, but I don’t think the manager thinks like that.”

United fans will have to wait a bit longer for Shea Lacey to make his debut for the club, but Amorim has already moved his attention to the Bournemouth match.

“We need to improve the way we play,” Amorim said after the match, as per Manchester United’s official website.

“I think we need to find a different way to play sometimes. So, we are thinking about that.

“We are working on that, and Bournemouth is going to be a different world.”

Sixth-place United will host 13th-place Bournemouth at Old Trafford next Monday evening for their Premier League clash, with kick-off scheduled for 8pm UK time.
