Manchester United midfielder Mason Mount could be Ruben Amorim's unlikely hero this season, despite the money they spent in the summer transfer window.
United spent significantly in the summer to try and improve Amorim's squad, bringing in Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo, and Matheus Cunha to try and transform their attack. They've seen mixed results so far, with Mbeumo the shining star of their new additions.
The Red Devils have shown plenty of inconsistency so far this season, but their campaign is far from over as they sit in sixth position. Amorim will be searching for the right players to guide them into the Champions League places, but it might not be a new signing who helps inspire them.
Mason Mount Unlikely Man Utd Hero
Mason Mount in action for Manchester United
Heading into the 2025/2026 season, many would have expected a front three of Cunha, Sesko, and Mbeumo to be a staple in Amorim's attack, but it's not worked out that way. Injuries have led to rotation in the front line, with Mount given the odd opportunity to play in one of the attacking midfield positions.
It's rare to see Mount given too many starts. In fact, he's started just seven times in the Premier League this season, but when he's given the chance from the beginning, he usually contributes. Mount scored the winner recently against Crystal Palace, while also scoring important goals against Sunderland and Wolves in the Premier League this season.
Mount could be Amorim's unlikely hero this term, and he's rarely let him down during his time at Old Trafford.
Mount Has Contributed More Than Cunha

Cunha was one of the marquee signings for United this summer, but he's been outshone so far this season. Mount has contributed more to the side, particularly in the final third, and he's a more important cog in Amorim's side than the Brazilian international.
Mount is starting to flourish in an attacking midfield role, and there's an argument to suggest he should be in the side ahead of Cunha. Against Wolves last time out, Cunha started in a centre-forward role due to Sesko's injury, but it will be interesting to see how Amorim looks to line up when everyone in the attack is fit.
After Sesko's return, it would be unfair on Amorim to drop Mount to accommodate both Sesko and Cunha, as he's now shown he's a deserving started for United.
