Manchester United‘know who they want’if Rúben Amorim goes, he’s‘better than Mikel Arteta’

Manchester United are rumoured to be considering new managerial options after Rúben Amorim’s side seems to be falling back into old habits.

According to GiveMeSport, Manchester United are in talks with Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner to replace the current Portuguese head coach, Ruben Amorim, after United have had a not-so-impressive start to the Premier League season.

It has been reported that United have been keeping a close eye on the Austrian coach, whose current contract with Palace ends at the end of the 2025-26 season.

It also said that United’s rivals, Liverpool, are linked to the ex-Austrian international, so the question remains which club will be under the 51-year-old’s management next campaign.

Reports have encouraged both clubs to increase their efforts to secure Glasner’s services, with his deal at Selhurst Park running out in a little over six months.

Is Glasner what United are missing?

Glasner took over from Roy Hodgson at Palace in February of 2024 and has since achieved unexpected success with the South London side, with Crystal Palace making history under Glasner after his side lifted the FA Cup during the summer.

The Eagles’ FA Cup 1-0 scoreline against Manchester City was the team’s first major trophy. Despite Palace finishing 12th in the Premier League, they had an unbeaten run in their final games of the season.

As well as this, Palace took home the Community Shield after a penalty shootout against Liverpool Glanser winning the squad their second major trophy all within three months.

Palace have also managed to rewrite their Premier League run, with Palace’s results seemingly impressive under Glasner this turn, leading former Tottenham star Jamie O’Hara to tell Sky Sports he feels the Austrian is “better than Mikel Arteta”.

Despite recently suffering a home defeat to United, many would argue that Glasner’s emphasis on his 3-4-2-1 system at Palace has left the manager in much better stead than United’s current coach, who has been at the club for just over a year.

Glasner has been praised for the tactics he showed at Palace, with his well-drilled pressing and flexible defensive structure that helped Palace maintain control in big moments.

A big difference with Amorim and Glasner also lies in the Austrians’ willingness to adapt their squad’s shape during matches, allowing the coach to maximise his team’s strengths throughout the entire 90 minutes.

Is Amorim’s time up at Old Trafford?

Although United’s results have recently changed, the squad still seem to be struggling to remain consistent under Amorim, with their five-game unbeaten run ending quickly after losing to Everton at Old Trafford.

The side managed to defeat Crystal Palace away from home thanks to two brilliant goals from Joshua Zirkzee and Mason Mount, although a draw to West Ham and an unconvincing 4-1 win vs Wolves have left doubts.

United are said to be targeting a top six finish this season to get the squad back into European football, and with the club sitting joint on points with 5th-place Chelsea and one point behind Glanser in 4th, they are technically on track.

While Amorim is likely safe for now, a few more poor results over the course of the winter break could cause problems for the United boss.
