Manchester United are reportedly set to swoop for one of their oldest and most frequently linked transfer targets in the January transfer window.
For much of the 2010s, United fans found themselves infuriated by yearly links with the same players, none of whom ever ultimately arrived at Old Trafford.

The likes of Wesley Sneijder, Ezequiel Garay and more recently Sergej Milenkovic-Savic, were summer after summer linked with moves to United that never came to fruition.
Now, reports in Spain suggest that another vintage name on that list could be set to finally arrive at Old Trafford at the age of 39.

Spanish publication Cadena SER and Fichajes report this week that Manchester United could be set for a sensational swoop for free agent Sergio Ramos.

The legendary Spanish centre back is available on a free, having left Mexican club Monterrey after his contract ended at the end of the 2025 season.
The reports in Spain suggest that Ramos has no intention of retiring after leaving Monterrey and, furthermore, that United are the current front runners for his signature should he return to Europe.
"Doubts" pervade as to whether the deal can be concluded, but the Premier League side are said to be seriously considering signing free agent Ramos.

At 39 years old, Sergio Ramos may be past his best, but his CV speaks for itself.
During a 16-year spell at Real Madrid, Ramos won La Liga five times, as well as four Champions Leagues and two Copa del Reys. He would then move on to PSG, where he won back-to-back Ligue 1 titles in 2022 and 2023.
At international level, Ramos started for Spain in the victorious Euro 2008, 2010 World Cup and Euro 2012 finals.

Shortly after that glorious back-to-back-to-back triumph, Ramos was repeatedly linked with swapping Madrid for Manchester. In an interview with the Sun, Ramos admitted the move was close:
Yes, I was close to playing for United. My father is a great fan of that team, but I stayed where I should, Real Madrid.
Despite everything, I maintain my admiration for the club, for the Premier League and for its players, because the pace of play is different, and it is a league from which we can all learn a lot. I was happy to stay in Madrid.
We could see one of the most long-awaited Manchester United transfers come to fruition long after anyone thought the chance was gone.
With several young players among their defensive contingent, United could perhaps do a lot worse than bringing in some experience in the form of Sergio Ramos.
