One of Manchester United’s players could leave in January, as talks have reportedly begun for the attacker to leave.

United are expected to be active in January, as they would like to sign a midfielder, and potentially a wing-back too, however, they may need to sanction some exits in order to afford more new signings after they spent over £170m in the summer.

Zirkzee talks begin between Man United and AS Roma

Zirkzee has been linked to Premier League rivals West Ham and Everton, but he has also been linked with a return to the Serie A, as Roma want to bolster their attacking options. It is understood that Man United are open to selling Zirkzee, but it hasn’t yet been confirmed whether they intend to or not.

According to a fresh report by Sky Sports Italy, negotiations have begun between Man United and Roma over a potential move for Zirkzee, and Roma reportedly see the Dutch forward as their first-choice striker option in the January window.

The initial proposal is understood to be a loan deal, but there will likely be options or obligations to buy, which is similar to Rasmus Hojlund’s deal at Napoli. Zirkzee joined Man United in the summer of 2024 for a fee of £36.5m, so United would look to get a similar fee back for him.

Should Man United sell Zirkzee?

There has been a lot of talk about Zirkzee leaving because his form hasn’t been good at United since Amorim came in. However, Amorim has had to rely on Zirkzee recently, with Benjamin Sesko still injured, and the Dutchman scored against West Ham earlier in December.

On top of Sesko’s injury, Bryan Mbeumo will leave for AFCON next week, and so Amorim’s attacking options will reduce, again, making you question whether it would be a wise decision to let the 24-year-old leave in January.

It seems that if they are to sell Zirkzee, Man United will need to replace him in some form, to give Amorim much more depth behind Sesko when he returns from his injury moving forward. One option is that instead of signing someone, Amorim could give Chido Obi more of a chance, or allow Mason Mount to become a mainstay in his starting XI.

Mount has impressed recently, scoring in the win against Wolves whilst he was featuring as a false nine up front, ahead of Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha.
