Gordon Hill explains why Man Utd are 'so glad' Liverpool are in crisis right now

Gordon Hill believes Liverpool’s ongoing collapse is happening at a good time for Manchester United, with the media focused on scrutinising Arne Slot and Mohamed Salah.

Even though Manchester United have been a difficult watch for the most part this season, the main silver lining is that Liverpool have quickly thrown away their Premier League title defence.

There’s a greater chance of pigs flying than Arne Slot winning back-to-back league titles this season, with Liverpool sitting 10th in the table after 15 matches.

United beat Liverpool 2-1 in the most memorable game of Amorim’s first full season to date, and results have worsened at Anfield since then.

Amorim is aiming for back-to-back wins to continue United’s climb up the Premier League table when the Red Devils host Bournemouth at Old Trafford.

Meanwhile, Liverpool will be looking for their first league win in three matches when they host Brighton on Saturday.

Liverpool may find themselves in crisis mode, but it wasn’t long ago that Amorim was attracting similar headlines to Slot.

Things can happen quickly in football – but there’s no denying Liverpool have been on a downward trajectory since Slot won the Premier League in his first season.

Liverpool bounced back from a public row with star player Mohamed Salah by beating Inter Milan in the Champions League on Tuesday night. Dominik Szobaszlai scored a late penalty to give Liverpool an important win at the San Siro.

United legend Gordon Hill has cast his opinion on the ongoing situation at Liverpool, stating that United will be happy to see their rivals take the media spotlight for once.

Hill took to X, writing: “I think Man Utd are so glad this is happening to Liverpool, because that means they are being left alone by the media, and not being bashed.”

United fans will always enjoy it when Liverpool lose football matches. That’s simply part of the rivalry, but there is no denying that the Red Devils get more scrutiny than any other club in England.

It’s about time the negative spotlight shone on Liverpool because the mainstream media makes no secret of enjoying basking in their success.

United haven’t been performing well for the past month, with the high standards set in October not matched, but Hill almost suggests that his former club would be facing more scrutiny if Liverpool weren’t doing so poorly.

Wayne Rooney verdict on Mohamed Salah row

Former United striker Wayne Rooney has accused Salah of ‘destroying his legacy’ at Liverpool following an explosive post-match interview at the weekend.

Salah hit out at his treatment at Liverpool under Slot after a 3-3 draw with Leeds on Saturday night, adding fuel to the fire that exists around Anfield right now.

Rooney, who was responsible for two transfer requests at United, insists that Slot must assert his authority over Salah.

“Arne Slot has to show his authority and pull him in and say, ‘You are not travelling with the team, what you said is not acceptable,’” Rooney said, as quoted by BBC Sport.

He added: “Take yourself off to AFCON and let everything calm down. If I was him there would be no way he would be in the team.

“It needs to be sorted out quickly either way.”
