West Ham Dealt Blow As 'Baby Lukaku' Snubs Transfer To The London Stadium

West Ham are unlikely to sign Union Saint-Gilloise striker Promise David, according to reports.

The Canadian international was among the front-runners to strengthen Nuno Espirito Santo’s options up front ahead of the January transfer window.

However, talkSPORT claim that David is “reluctant” to leave a team playing in the Champions League for one that is fighting against relegation.

The Hammers are currently sitting in 18th place, two points from safety following the draw against Brighton at the weekend.

Why were West Ham interested in the forward

Nuno is keen to bring in a target man and David fits the description perfectly. He is 6ft 5 and has been labelled the “Baby Lukaku” after the former Manchester United and Chelsea player.

David’s goal return for Union Saint-Gilloise is decent, having scored 34 times in 65 appearances for the Belgian club, but he has yet to be tested at the very highest level.

The striker has had spells in Canada, Croatia, the United States, Malta and Estonia prior to his stint with Union SG.

Who could West Ham target instead of David?

The Irons have been linked with a whole host of no.9s over the past month or so. Strasbourg’s Joaquin Panichelli was the latest to be mentioned earlier this week.

AC Milan’s Santiago Gimenez, Coventry’s City Haji Wright, Al-Hilal’s Ivan Toney, Crystal Palace’s Jean-Philippe Mateta, Parma’s Mateo Pellegrino and Norwich’s Josh Sargent are just some of the other names that are said to be on the London club’s radar.

A lot will hinge on which team is willing to part ways with their striker in January for a reasonable price. Furthermore, as the latest development with David demonstrates, Nuno and the board will have to convince the player to make the move as well.
