Ruben Amorim is looking for his first win over Bournemouth as Manchester United head coach.

Last season, Manchester United suffered a 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth at Old Trafford after a miserable performance from the Red Devils.

It was Ruben Amorim’s heaviest defeat since his appointment as head coach just over a month earlier.

United drew 1-1 with Bournemouth in the reverse fixture in April, and Ruben Amorim then achieved victory over Bournemouth in pre-season. But he is still looking for his first competitive victory over the Cherries.

Ahead of Monday’s meeting at Old Trafford, Amorim will look back with pride at the changes he has made in the last year.

Man United have fixed weakness shown vs Bournemouth

When Amorim first arrived as head coach, he spoke about being shocked at the physicality and intensity of the Premier League.

In particular, Amorim struggled with set pieces, and his United side were undone by Bournemouth from dead-ball situations last December.

After the match, Amorim said: “You cannot speak about fair in football because they scored and we didn’t, but we didn’t give anything [away] until the set-pieces and then we were so near [to scoring] the goal. But I think everybody felt a little anxious, not just the players but also the fans.

“All the areas are of concern, especially of course, set-pieces. We are training on that, we have to improve. There’s a lot of teams that are really strong on that, so we are working on it a lot of the time.”

Amorim reassured fans that he and his staff were focusing on set pieces, and they deserve credit for the turnaround seen in 2025/26.

Man United are now Premier League leaders at set pieces

United have gone from conceding countless set pieces last season to now being the most dangerous dead-ball team in the Premier League.

Statistics show that United are even better than Arsenal at corners, scoring more regularly than any top-flight side.

Defensively, United have also improved, conceding seven goals from set pieces this season.

Amorim will likely warn his players about Bournemouth’s set-piece threat after what happened last season, but the Red Devils are far better equipped to handle it this time around.
