Spain legend Sergio Ramos has been linked with a shock move to Manchester United after leaving Mexico side Monterrey. It isn't the first time the 39-year-old has been mentioned in connection with an Old Trafford switch, though the latest rumours appear wide of the mark.

Ramos returned to boyhood club Sevilla in 2023 after spells with Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain, but lasted just one season. He moved to Mexico for Monterrey's 2025 campaign, playing at the Club World Cup, but has left this month after not extending his contract.

If Ramos is to prolong his career, it's unclear where the next chapter will take place. According to ESPN, United remain focused on signing younger players and have not held any talks over a move for the veteran.

It was a different story a decade ago, though. Back then, the Red Devils were serious about a move for Ramos, and he would later shed light on how close he was to making the jump to the Premier League.

"I stayed where I should have stayed, Real Madrid, but I was indeed close to playing for United," Ramos said in 2023. He was speaking just months after returning to Sevilla and recognised his career could have ended up taking a different path.

"It was not to be, but I do keep that admiration for the club, to the Premier League and the players, because the rhythm of play, the pace is different, and it's a league we can all learn a great deal from, all of us," he added. "So that was not meant to be. I was glad to stay in Madrid, and now I'm glad to be in Sevilla."

Wherever Ramos ends up next, he leaves Monterrey after sharing an emotional farewell message. "Saying goodbye is never easy," he wrote on Instagram. "It ends a stage that started full of excitement in February and that has allowed me to discover a country, a city, a football... and that leaves me many new experiences and, above all, many friends.

"I will forever be proud to have worn the Rayados captain bracelet, to have led the team in the first Club World Cup in its new format, to have battled in the Closure, in the Opening, in the Leagues Cup, in the Concacaf Champions Cup... and to have bravely defended the Steel Giant by your side in all the matches we have played at home.

"Left it all on and off the court so I can perform at my best. 34 games, more than 3,000 minutes, 8 goals and so many emotions that can't be described in numbers. To the club, to my dear colleagues, to the technical bodies, to the employees, to everyone, thank you. And above all, thank you, fans, who have brought me your warmth and affection from the first moment I stepped into the city. I will always remember with nostalgia this stage of my career and I will always proudly say 'Arriba el Monterrey!'"
