Henry Winter believes Scott McTominay is a worthy contender for the 2025 BBC Sports Personality of the Year award, despite not receiving a nomination.
It has been an incredible year for Scott McTominay.
The 29-year-old left Manchester United in the summer of 2024 before going on to win the Serie A title in his first season at Napoli, where he won the division’s most valuable player award.
To make matters even better, McTominay played a key role as Scotland secured qualification for the 2026 World Cup.
That means McTominay has reached legendary status in the past year.
Former United midfielders Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt have fears over Kobbie Mainoo going the same way as McTominay, by leaving United before going on to better things.
Mainoo, like McTominay before he left Old Trafford, is playing a bit part role in United’s midfield.

Scott McTominay’s surprise omission from Sports Personality of the Year award
A shortlist of six contenders has been announced for the 2025 BBC Sports Personality of the Year award.

They include Lionesses Hannah Hampton and Chloe Kelly, rugby union player Ellie Kildunne, darts sensation Luke Littler, golfer Rory McIlroy and Formula 1 driver Lando Norris.
The list includes two United fans, Littler and McIlroy, but there is no place for former academy graduate McTominay.
McTominay’s omission comes as a surprise to respected football reporter Henry Winter. The journalist took to X, writing: “Scott McTominay a surprise omission from #SPORTY short-list? Won Scudetto, voted Serie A Player of the Year, nominated for Ballon d’Or, helped Scotland qualify for World Cup, scored vital/spectacular goal against Denmark that’s surely a Puskas Award contender. Amazing year.”

Winter raises a valid argument not only for McTominay to receive a nomination, but to win the Sports Personality of the Year award for 2025.
