Man Utd reached an agreement to sign the player earlier in the year.

Lecce club president Sticchi Damiani has spoken of his immense pride over the deal that saw Patrick Dorgu move to Manchester United at the start of the year.

Ruben Amorim requested wing-back reinforcement during his first transfer window at the club and was given the funds to sign Dorgu from the Serie A club. United paid an initial £25.2 million for the wing-back, with a further £4.2m in potential add-ons.

Dorgu has made 35 appearances across all competitions since he moved to Manchester, with 15 of those coming during the current campaign. The Denmark international is quite clearly a raw talent with plenty of room for improvement and has not started any of the previous three Premier League matches.

United are hopeful Dorgu will get better in the years ahead, and it is important to remember that it is still less than a year since the 21-year-old moved to Old Trafford. There is plenty more to come from the defender but his progress in England has been a huge source of pride for his former club already.

It is still too early to fairly gauge how successful Patrick Dorgu will be as a signing, though it is right to demand more from him in a Manchester United shirt. The Denmark international had only made 57 appearances for the Lecce first-team before he completed his move to Manchester, with his £30 million move a real success story for the Serie A club.

Speaking in a recent interview, Lecce president Sticchi Damiani spoke about the transfer deals he was most proud of during his time with the club. “[Samuel] Umtiti was an extraordinary operation, a world champion who gave a lot to our club, but that of Dorgu represents the Lecce model 360,” Damiani told Tuttomercatoweb.

“Taken from the youth sector of a Danish team, he spent a year in the Primavera and half a season in Serie A, and then was sold to Manchester United for €38 million. It is a symbol of the quality of our club. And doing business with Manchester United is an additional source of pride.”

Amorim demands more from Dorgu

Speaking last month, Ruben Amorim admitted he felt there was 'anxiety' every time Patrick Dorgu received the ball for Manchester United. “When I see them training they are doing so much better than in games,” he said of Dorgu and Diogo Dalot. “Then Patrick, when I see him playing for the national team, he’s scored a great goal against Scotland, the decision that he made under pressure was completely different to the decision he’s making in our team. You can feel the anxiety every time Patrick touches the ball. I can feel it, the anxiety.

"I remember the shot against Everton. That was easier than the decision that he had to make Scotland – and I saw when he played in Italy. But again, here is different and sometimes the pressure is hard for them in the beginning, but he has time to improve.

“I just need to understand the context in trying to help them. They are far from their best, and they know it. Like a lot of players in our team, like myself. I just look at them, and think they have so much more to give. So let’s see this week if we can improve that.”
