FPL Gameweek 16 Transfer Tips: Two Players to Buy, Hold, & Sell

Gameweek 15 delivered a mix of surprises and expected outcomes, shaking up the Fantasy Premier League landscape once again. Everton and Man City both recorded dominant 3-0 wins over Nottingham Forest and Sunderland respectively, while Aston Villa stunned Arsenal with a 2-1 victory. Leeds and Liverpool played out a thrilling 3-3 draw, providing fantasy managers with plenty of twists and turns, and Spurs comfortably saw off Brentford 2-0. Meanwhile, Newcastle edged past Burnley 2-1, and Chelsea were held to a goalless draw by Bournemouth, highlighting the unpredictable nature of the league this season.

From a fantasy perspective, midfielders were particularly influential this week. Bruno Fernandes topped the charts with 18 points, demonstrating why he remains a cornerstone for many squads. Phil Foden also shone with 12 points, delivering explosive returns for Man City managers. Everton’s Dewsbury-Hall continued his fine form, amassing 16 points, while other midfielders like Newcastle’s Bruno Guimarães and Leeds’ Stach chipped in with solid contributions, proving that the midfield remains a key battleground for FPL points.

Upfront, Liverpool’s Ekitiké managed 13 points, highlighting the importance of selecting in-form forwards even when their teams are inconsistent. Defensively, Chelsea’s Chalobah and Man City’s Rúben and Gvardiol contributed clean sheet points, but unlike previous weeks—where defenders often dominated the points table—this gameweek saw midfielders taking center stage, delivering the bulk of explosive returns. Are we seeing a subtle reversal in the trend? The performances suggest that while premium defenders remain valuable, midfielders are increasingly dictating FPL outcomes. As we head into the next gameweek, these shifts offer lessons and inspiration for transfers, captaincy decisions, and differential picks, setting the stage for another thrilling round of FPL action.

However, the biggest show-stealer this week is the sudden windfall for managers: with AFCON departures, everyone now has five free transfers, effectively a mini wildcard to rejig ailing squads, fix problem areas, and take bold moves without the usual point hit. This unexpected opportunity could reshape team strategies ahead of the coming fixtures and sets the stage for a thrilling next round of FPL action.

So, let’s start with our BUY-HOLD-SELL article for FPL Gameweek 16, sponsored by …. Well, nobody. We are poor, but you can help here if you want 😊

FPL Gameweek 16 Transfer Tips: Two Players to BUY

PS – I am assuming everyone has Haaland in their teams. If not, he is your priority buy

Bukayo Saka (£10.2m) – MID, Arsenal– 20.3% TSB

With Wolves sitting at the bottom of the league for both goals conceded (33) and expected goals conceded (22.9), their defense is a glaring weak spot this week. Arsenal, who are second in goals scored, face arguably the easiest fixture in FPL, and Saka stands out as the player most likely to benefit. Wolves’ abysmal Goals Prevented (-5.9) highlights just how vulnerable their keeper is, making it likely that Arsenal’s attacking trio—and especially Saka—will have multiple clear opportunities to exploit the leaky backline.

Saka’s recent form only reinforces his appeal. He has netted 2 goals and provided 2 assists in his last five matches, yet remains just above 20% owned, making him a differential with huge upside. With Arsenal fully rested midweek in the Champions League and no midweek Premier League game next week, he is expected to play the full 90 minutes, giving managers maximum exposure to points. Considering the fixture, form, and ownership, Saka is a prime buy for those looking to capitalize on a high-probability attacking return.

Harry Wilson (£5.3m) – MID, Fulham – 3.8% TSB

In the last three gameweeks, among midfielders, Wilson has been in scintillating form—ranked 3rd for FPL points, goal involvements, assists, and BPS. His consistent attacking returns make him one of the most in-form midfielders outside the premium bracket, putting him just behind the likes of Foden and Bruno Fernandes, who cost above £8.5m, while Wilson comes much cheaper and has ownership under 5%.

Now, he faces Burnley, who sit dead last in nearly every defensive metric—shots conceded, shots in the box, shots on target, big chances allowed, NPxGC, xGC, xCS, and goals conceded. For managers looking to climb mini-leagues, Wilson represents a perfect combination of form, fixture, and differential potential.

Gianluigi Donnarumma (£5.7m) – GKP, Man City – 10.0% TSB

Bryan Mbeumo remains a must-hold this gameweek. Last week, we recommended holding him, and patient managers were rewarded with 8 points, proving the value of sticking with him. The underlying stats strongly support backing him again

Since GW6, Bournemouth have been among the league’s worst defensively across every key metric—shots conceded, shots in the box, shots on target, big chances conceded, NPxGC, xGC, xCS, and goals conceded—while Man Utd rank in the top three for attacking output, dominating in shots, shots on target, big chances, and goals scored in that period.

With Mbeumo as their leading scorer, he combines form, fixture, and team dominance, making him a high-probability source of FPL points and a clear hold for managers this week.

Nick Woltemade (£7.5m) – FWD, Newcastle – 22.5% TSB

Despite being the 2nd most sold unflagged forward this week, Woltemade remains a strong hold. He faces a Sunderland side that hasn’t kept a single clean sheet since GW9, making this a favourable fixture for attackers. Newcastle, meanwhile, have been in excellent scoring form — third-highest goals in the league over this period, only behind Man City and Man Utd — which boosts his upside.

Individually, Woltemade’s form is quietly reliable: he has returned in 3 of his last 4 away games and 2 of his last 3 EPL matches. With strong underlying fixtures, a goal-friendly team environment, and consistent recent outputs, selling him now feels premature. He’s a clear hold.

Mohamed Salah (£14.0m) – MID, Liverpool – 17.5% TSB

Salah being the most expensive midfielder in the game comes with one non-negotiable expectation: consistent minutes. And right now, that’s the one thing he cannot offer. After a very public fallout with Arne Slot, he has been benched for three consecutive Premier League matches and was even left out of Liverpool’s European squad in midweek. For a player of his price, this kind of uncertainty is simply not sustainable in FPL.

The bigger concern is that this doesn’t look like a short-term rotation call. Slot has openly admitted he “has no clue” whether Salah has played his last game for Liverpool, and the rumour mill is in overdrive with talk of a January exit. Add the fact that Salah is anyway set to leave soon for AFCON, and suddenly you’re looking at an extremely high-value asset who might offer very few — or even zero — minutes in the coming weeks.

With form dipping, minutes collapsing, and his Liverpool future under question, the opportunity cost of holding Salah is just too high. In FPL terms, that’s a straightforward sell.

Note: It’s been reported that Mo Salah has been recalled to the Liverpool squad for the game against Brighton at Anfield. It remains to be seen if he starts or appears from the bench. Even if he plays he’s off to AFCON after that.

Daniel Muñoz (£6.0m) – DEF, Crystal Palace – 21.3% TSB

Munoz has been one of the standout defensive assets in FPL this season, regularly producing attacking returns and clean sheet potential as a wing-back. However, recent developments have drastically changed his outlook. The Crystal Palace right-back is set to undergo knee surgery and is expected to be sidelined for around four to six weeks, with recovery timelines and fitness still uncertain after the procedure.

For FPL managers, this absence coincides with a key run of fixtures and means a significant chunk of matches without returns from a premium defender. With Palace likely to replace him with low-attack options like Nathaniel Clyne and others in the interim, this makes offloading him not just a matter of free-hit timing but a practical decision to reinvest £6m into players who are fit and delivering minutes — especially with so many mid-season opportunities to bolster your squad elsewhere.

In short: knee surgery, weeks on the sidelines, and a dip in attacking threat = classic sell territory in FPL.
