Manchester United's hopes of signing a new defensive midfielder have been handed a major boost, according to reports in Spain

Manchester United are looking to strengthen their squad where possible in January but any big signings might have to wait until the summer.

The Red Devils have seen improvement under Ruben Amorim this season with the transfer business at Old Trafford proving to be more fruitful compared to previous campaigns. Senne Lammens, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo have all looked like solid additions while Benjamin Sesko still has plenty of time to prove his worth.

United have targeted proven Premier League players to try and lessen the risk of new signings. Cunha and Mbeumo have shown that to be a shrewd move and it is something the Red Devils have in mind as they eye a new central midfielder.

A number of names have been linked with an Old Trafford move as they seek a successor to Casemiro, whose contract is set to expire at the end of the campaign

Man Utd ‘set to make’ bid for Adam Wharton

One midfielder widely reported to be on United’s shortlist is Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton. The 21-year-old has been at Selhurst Park since 2024, having come through the academy at Blackburn Rovers.

According to Defensa Central in Spain, United are set to make an £88m offer for Wharton with the report describing him as one of the ‘Premier League’s biggest sensations’. The Red Devils have also been handed a boost in their pursuit of Wharton - with Real Madrid said to be backing out of the deal as they are not willing to make the same financial commitment to signing Wharton as the likes of United.

Premier League rivals Liverpool and Manchester City have also been linked with a move for the Crystal Palace man. The midfielder has been a key part of the Eagles’ success under Oliver Glasner and it is no surprise to see him linked with some of the biggest clubs in the Premier League.

Adam Wharton agent discusses his Crystal Palace future

Speaking about Wharton’s future, his agent James Featherstone said on talkSPORT: "We've got a plan. It doesn't have to be achieved right at this moment.

"He's got his in-game and in-season goals, so he's got to do his bit, and the rest will take care of itself in a very structured and calm way to ultimately maximise his talent."

He had said earlier in the same interview how he wants Wharton to play in the Champions League: "I was sat in his brother's kitchen, and Adam hadn't even made his debut for Blackburn Rovers yet.

"There were question marks over his physicality, but we said, 'let's aim for the stars. He can play for England.' So what do you have to do to play for England? Well, you need to play in the Champions League.

"To play in the Champions League, you need to play for one of the top teams in one of the top leagues.”
