The career of Harry Maguire at Manchester United has been one full of ups and downs.
Signed to be Manchester United’s own version of Virgil van Dijk, Harry Maguire was always doomed to be judged by his massive £80m transfer fee.
Despite plenty of criticism over the years, Maguire was a consistent performer for United, deserving way more credit than he got in the first year of his spell at the club.
Maguire became the most criticised player in football. Often scapegoated and used as a joke in the sports world and even outside it, such as when the Ghanaian parliament mocked Maguire.
But things improved for Maguire after Erik ten Hag stripped him of the captain’s armband.

“The worst time was probably the end of the third season, really”, Maguire admitted.
“We were in a really poor position in the league, a lot of scrutiny on us, I was the captain at the time, so I took a lot of the responsibility and rightly so.”
Continuing, Maguire actually admitted that, in total, it was not as bad as often made out.
“That was probably the worst time, but I don’t think it was as bad as made out or was portrayed in the media or social media, should I say. The redemption also wasn’t as good as people made out.”

Maguire has stepped up multiple times over the past 12 months, scoring vital goals at key times, winning the club games, and probably saving Amorim’s job a handful of times as well.
At Old Trafford, Maguire is a very popular player, with fans respecting the defender’s desire to make himself a success at United, loving the club enough to endure the bad and end up stronger on the other side of it.
While not a club legend, Maguire will be remembered as a cult hero at the club, and he deserves no less.
