Marcelo was one of the best full-backs in European football during his time at Real Madrid, but he believes Manchester United recently sold a player who is better than he was.
It is no secret that Manchester United made some big mistakes in the transfer market down the years. Some of the decisions made by the previous executives are still negatively impacting the club, even though Ineos are trying to restore the club’s reputation when it comes to buying players.
This includes a complete shift in strategy, too. Ineos have focused on signing young talent since taking control of football operations at Old Trafford. Sir Jim Ratcliffe is thinking about the long-term future and delivering sustainable success on the pitch.
That will involve getting better players and ensuring young talent like Kobbe Mainoo doesn’t go to waste, after such a promising breakthrough at the club, winning the FA Cup.
United fans won’t want to see Mainoo going the same way as Alvaro Carreras, who is currently playing a starting role for Real Madrid after leaving Old Trafford in 2024.

Marcelo rates Alvaro Carreras
Marcelo and Toni Kroos featured in a new video on Real Madrid’s TikTok channel recently.
The pair were asked a list of questions about several players, with Marcelo revealing that he thinks Carreras is a better player than he was.
Carreras came through United’s academy, where he was highly thought of, but that never resulted in enough opportunities in the first team.

That’s some statement given Carreras is still in his first season at Real Madrid. Although he has impressed, Marcelo has won the Champions League five times during his time at the Spanish club.
Carreras may be amazing, but he has some way to go to match Marcelo’s achievements for Real Madrid.

It also shows that United really missed a trick when it comes to Carreras, especially now that Ruben Amorim is playing a system that is reliant on wing-backs.
Carreras would be the perfect fit for United now had Erik ten Hag not sold him to Benfica.
