Man Utd had brilliant manager who was ‘so under appreciated’, says Harry Maguire

Harry Maguire has played under six different managers as a Manchester United player.

Since signing for Manchester United in August 2019, Harry Maguire has endured a rollercoaster ride.

There has been a mixture of hard times and bright spells for the experienced centre-back, who is currently seen as an important squad player in Ruben Amorim’s defence.

Unfortunately for United, Maguire is currently out with an injury, with no specific date given for a return. It doesn’t help that United are also without Matthijs de Ligt in the heart of defence.

Maguire is one of the players who appears to suit Amorim’s back-three system because it gives him more support in defence. It means that United’s defenders can be less reliant on pace to deal with their attack-minded opponents.

Each player will have their own opinion of each manager they’ve played under.

There have been a lot of managerial hires at Old Trafford in recent years, which means Maguire has had to play under multiple managers, who have all had different ideas about how they wanted United to play.

Out of all his previous managers, Maguire singled out Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for being underappreciated.

“Ole was brilliant, I think Ole was so underappreciated,” Maguire told Discover+.

“He never got the recognition for what he was doing. It felt like, again, it was at Manchester United, if he was doing it at any other club he would have had recognition.

“It felt like everyone was waiting for the moment to kick him down, and he never allowed it, he was a real good manager, a real good staff around him with Kieran and Carrick, a fantastic man-manager, he knew how to look after his team and his players.

“It felt like he never really got the recognition and it was a shame really, ultimately that third season we didn’t do enough, the balance of the team wasn’t what we had the previous two years, but I can’t speak highly enough of Ole.”
