David Hirst: I never fell out with Sheffield Wednesday

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim has claimed that Wednesday loanee Harry Amass has been “struggling” in the Championship.

Harry Amass reacted to Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim’s claim that he is “struggling” on loan at Sheffield Wednesday by posting a cryptic response on his Instagram page on Monday lunchtime.

The Wednesday loanee, who joined the Owls on transfer deadline day in September, was, alongside fellow teenager Chido Obi, the subject of conversation among Red Devils and Wednesday supporters on Sunday evening after quotes from the embargoed section of Amorim’s pre-Bournemouth press conference were revealed.

The United head coach had been asked if he rates midfielder Kobbie Mainoo after refusing to start him in a Premier League game so far this season and he answered the question by namechecking Amass and Obi.

Amorim said: “Of course he's not playing so many games, but Kobbie has had opportunities, especially last year. Everyone has.

“Amass is now struggling in Championship. Chido is not always a starter in under 21. All these guys played when a lot of people were saying sack the manager.”

To suggest Amass is struggling on loan at Hillsborough is somewhat staggering. The left-sided defender has started every Championship game he has been available for since moving to South Yorkshire and has developed at a rapid rate of knots.

Amorim comment has left supporters perplexed

The Star has reason to believe Amorim meant Amass is playing in a struggling team at Hillsborough, although the way he phrased his answer does make it sound as though he was being critical of Amass. Nevertheless, the fact he did not name the Owls has attracted criticism from Wednesdayites and United supporters alike.

No shortage of Red Devils fans have kept tabs on Amass’ progress at Hillsborough in the last few months and have been pleased with how his loan spell has unfolded thus far. He has been one of Wednesday’s most consistent performers and he scooped the club’s Player of the Month award for November recently.
