Harry Amass had the perfect response to Ruben Amorim’s criticism of Manchester United’s academy graduates, but wasn’t brave enough to leave his post up. Amorim has turned heads in the build-up to United’s game against Bournemouth on Monday night by slamming the level of the club’s young players.
Amass, Tyler Fredricson and Chido Obi are the only three United academy graduates to have made their first-team debuts for the club since Amorim arrived over a year ago. That is a departure from the club’s proud history of bringing through homegrown youngsters, but Amorim had a stern response while speaking about Kobbie Mainoo and Toby Collyer.
"He (Collyer) played (for United). He's from the academy. He played here," he said. “He went to West Bromwich. He's not playing. He played for Manchester United. So sometimes it's not because he's from the academy or whatever.
“It's the situation, what's happened. I don't know what is going to be the future (for Mainoo). Let's see after this match. Amass is now struggling in the Championship. Chido is not always a starter in under-21s. All these guys played when a lot of people were saying sack the manager!”
His comments didn’t go down well with United supporters and they appear to have riled Amass too. The 18-year-old left-back is currently on loan with Sheffield Wednesday, where he has been performing well, despite the club’s difficulties, with points deductions for financial struggles leaving them rock bottom of the Championship on -9.
Amass has been one of the shining lights during a tough spell in the club’s history and reacted to Amorim’s comments by posting a photo of himself holding Wednesday’s player of the month award for November on his Instagram story. Perhaps sensing a backlash from his employer, he later deleted the post.
The young defender has only made seven appearances for the United first team, having been handed his debut in March. He was loaned out to gain more experience, with Amorim able to call upon Patrick Dorgu and Diogo Dalot at left wingback.

He has made 15 appearances for Wednesday so far, contributing one goal and one assist. Amorim may not have been impressed, but Owls boss Henrik Pedersen is delighted with his player.
“I think he has had a fantastic development,” Pedersen said of Amass recently. “A bit like Charlie [McNeill], a big talent, but what is big talent? With young players, we know they can do something, and then they are a little bit sometimes good, sometimes not good. Sometimes there’s a big difference in the level of the performance.
“I think Harry started the season very well, then he had a little bit where he went down. Not down, but where it was more unstable. But then in the last five, six games he has been very strong.
“He does a great job, and he does a great job together with his teammates because, again, nobody can do something alone – and it is the same for Harry. But Harry has played a fantastic season. I’m sure that we will do everything to keep him, and I’m also sure that for Harry and for United it’s a good match right now.”
