Ruben Amorim did not confirm whether Manchester United will play against Bournemouth with a different formation. Amorim has been wedded to his 3-4-3 formation since his appointment from Sporting Lisbon, but there has been a suggestion that he could tinker with his approach to face Bournemouth.

United returned to winning ways in the Premier League with a victory against Wolves last time out, with Bruno Fernandes scoring a brace and Bryan Mbeumo and Mason Mount scoring a goal each.

The Reds have the opportunity to win back-to-back league matches against Bournemouth. United will move to fifth in the table if they beat the Cherries at Old Trafford.

Amorim has made one change from last week's win. Noussair Mazraoui has dropped out of the squad to report to the Africa Cup of Nations, which has opened the door for Leny Yoro to be recalled.

Speaking ahead of kick-off, Amorim told Sky Sports: “It’s always the same thing, the formation is not the most important thing, it’s the way we set up the team and try to take advantage from the opponent.

"Of course, we need to think about the future, we need to have more variety in our game, we are going to lose two wingers [to AFCON] so we need to adapt to the players we have and learn from some mistakes in the past.”

Amorim was asked whether it would be three at the back against Bournemouth and responded: “You can find out. And you can see the line-up is the same, so you tell me.”

Asked about United's form, Amorim said: “Inconsistencies. We are winning more games, we are not losing so many but that is not enough.

"We had some moments that could have been crucial for more points this season and we need to acknowledge that. We are improving in certain areas, we are having more shots and scoring more goals.

"We need to be careful with the other side of the game, we are suffering too many goals and that could be a problem in the future.”

The United boss discussed Matheus Cunha's form, adding: “You have to see that Cunha had an injury, Bryan [Mbeumo] is the type of player who can give us more pace, more threat when he makes the runs, Cunha is completely the opposite and sometimes one is finishing more plays than the other, sometimes it is a matter of luck.

"Cunha did a really good job that last game, he had some chances, he needs to score more goals but he is creating overloads in certain areas and Bryan is being the threat that we knew from Brentford.”

Bournemouth have won 3-0 at Old Trafford in successive seasons, but they arrive in Manchester after a spell of six games without a win in the Premier League.
