'I trained' - Ruben Amorim hints at Manchester United formation change after Bournemouth draw

Manchester United 4-4 AFC Bournemouth match verdict and review

Man Utd drew with AFC Bournemouth in the Premier League on Monday night.

United appeared to change formation a few times during their chaotic 4-4 draw with Bournemouth in the Premier League on Monday night. Amorim only made one change to his starting line up for the match, as Leny Yoro replaced the absent Noussair Mazraoui in the backline.

Amorim's side started the game with an unorthodox four-man defence consisting of Leny Yoro and Diogo Dalot in the full-back roles, with Ayden Heaven and Luke Shaw utilised in the centre-back positions. They changed to a three-man defence at times, with Dalot adopting one of the wing-back roles with Amad Diallo.

Amorim hints at United formation change

Ruben Amorim has been heavily criticised for his use of a 3-4-2-1 formation during his tenure as Manchester United head coach but appears open to a tactical change. The Portuguese head coach has regularly downplayed the emphasis on his tactical set-up, though clearly believes a switch might be required in the coming weeks.

It was reported that Amorim recently made a change in United's training sessions where he trialled a four-man defence as was then seen in the Bournemouth draw on Monday night. Speaking after the game, Amorim refused to be drawn on whether he had specifically changed formation against The Cherries but confirmed he is open to using a four-man defence at some point.

"That is for you to discuss, not for me," he told reporters. "I will say the same thing, you can play with the same players, looks like one thing, can be another thing. Now guys, it is for you. I know that you guys know that I train this week the back four, I don't know how! That is a good thing for you guys to discuss this week."

Asked for his verdict on United's performance, Amorim added: "If you understand a little bit, if you follow the club like I follow Premier League for so long, you have not just the duty to try to win the games, but the way you try to win the games is so important for the fans, and of course they are desperate to win, but they are also, I feel that they are desperate to be inspired when they come to Old Trafford. Today was inspiring, I think, because also because of Bournemouth, but in the end that's the feeling of frustration not winning the game."
