We Asked AI Who Will Be The 5 Biggest Premier League Spenders in January

We are just over two weeks away from the January transfer window opening up. We asked ChatGPT which Premier League teams will spend the most money during that period on player transfers – but who are they?

ChatGPT pulled several sources of varying quality from around the internet to support its decisions – but do you agree with them?

Chelsea

Chelsea are no strangers to profligate spending – their inclusion in this list should come of no surprise. If anything, the Blues may be a little too low, especially when Todd Boehly’s tendency to splash the cash is taken into consideration.

However, Chelsea spent an awful lot of money over the course of the summer – this will throw a spanner in any transfer plans they may have had in January.

In total, they spent over £314 million in the summer of 2025. Additionally, there aren’t too many holes in their squad, so there isn’t much reason for them to break the bank this winter.

Arsenal

Like Chelsea, Arsenal also spent a lot of money in the summer – likewise, there aren’t many gaps in their squad that need addressing as things stand.

The Gunners are currently top of the Premier League and the Champions League table. It simply isn’t necessary for them to spend a lot of money in January – and they probably won’t.

With that being said, they are still linked with a few high-profile stars who won’t be cheap to acquire – and Mikel Arteta is always looking to improve his squad, even if it means overloading certain positions.

Liverpool

Liverpool threw around money like confetti at a wedding in the summer – now that we’re in December, the Reds don’t have an awful lot to show for it.

Sixth in the Premier League table and with a hopelessly unbalanced squad, Liverpool’s summer window will go down as one of the most hare-brained in football history.

It has left Arne Slot’s men in a position where they have to spend money once again in January. Despite this, they will need to be careful, lest they run the risk of violating Financial Fair Play regulations.

Newcastle United

Out of all the teams on this list, Newcastle United are probably the ones who need a successful January transfer window the most. Eddie Howe’s men are currently 12th in the Premier League table and suffered an humilating defeat against bitter rivals Sunderland last time out.

Nevertheless, the Toon have the resources to be able to sign some top players in the winter. Their summer was marred by the Alexander Isak saga – they will have no such roadblocks in January.

Newcastle’s starting XI is strong, but they lack quality in depth – this is what they will likely focus on when the transfer window opens next month.

Manchester United

Jim Ratcliffe began to flex his financial muscles in the summer, as Manchester United snapped up a slew of expensive talents – and ChatGPT thinks that they’re just getting started.

Ruben Amorim is a manager who needs money to be available for transfers. With such a rigid footballing philosophy, it is imperative that he is able to bring players to fit his system on board.

Like most of the teams in this list, United spent a lot of money in the summer, but it isn’t out of the question for them to do so again in January with a midfielder seemingly the most glaring need for the club.

We shall see. See if you agree with who we think is the best football TV pundit.
