Sunderland 1-0 Newcastle United - Jordan Cronin reacts
Newcastle United latest news: Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimaraes is at risk of a Premier League ban after an incident during their defeat to Sunderland.
The Brazilian joined the club of losing Tyne-Wear derby captains on Sunday as his side slipped to defeat at the Stadium of Light. Post-match, Guimaraes admitted he was ‘embarrassed’ by the defeat: “Everyone came here and knew exactly what it meant for the fans,” the Brazilian told reporters on the final whistle.
“The whole message in the changing room today was to give (win) it for the fans and we didn't. I am so embarrassed for me.
“It is frustrating because we know we have a better team than them. It's clear for me, but we didn't perform like a better team today.
“So it makes me feel angry because now I have to be very worried about my words because I'm very angry with the performance. We missed that consistency.
“That is clear it is not there, the mentality is not there. We have to go again on Wednesday and put the club in the semi-final.”

Guimaraes will be able to play freely in that semi-final on Wednesday night, but he will have to watch his step on Saturday when Chelsea head to the north east.
Bruno Guimaraes a risk of Premier League ban
Guimaraes was one of four Magpies players to be shown a yellow card during that defeat at the Stadium of Light, alongside Sandro Tonali, Malick Thiaw and Joe Willock. Unlike his teammates, that booking puts Guimaraes at immediate risk of a suspension as it was his fourth of the campaign.
Premier League rules on yellow card suspensions read: ‘According to The FA's disciplinary rules, any player who earns five bookings from their side's first 19 Premier League matches of a season will have to serve a one-match ban in the same competition. Premier League yellow cards are not carried over to the EFL Cup or FA Cup.
‘Players who accumulate 10 yellow cards in Premier League matches up to and including their side's 32nd fixture will serve a two-match suspension in the competition.’
Those rules mean Guimaraes must avoid being booked against Chelsea, Manchester United or Burnley to ensure he is not handed a one-match ban. If he is shown a yellow card this weekend, then he will miss the trip to Old Trafford - one which will be a huge blow to Newcastle United’s chances of picking up a second-straight away win against the Red Devils.
Only a red card against Fulham on Wednesday night will prevent Guimaraes from featuring against the Blues on Saturday. That is because accumulated yellow card suspensions do not carry over from league to cup action.
Dan Burn and Joelinton are also at risk of a possible Premier League ban, although both will have to be booked twice in their next three outings in order to meet the threshold required. Malick Thiaw and Jacob Ramsey need to be shown yellow cards in all of Newcastle United’s next three Premier League matches to be handed a one-match ban.
