Newcastle United confirm key man could miss 10 matches through injury - including Man Utd &…

Sunderland 1-0 Newcastle United - Joe Buck match reaction

Newcastle United news: Eddie Howe has spoken about Dan Burn’s injury issues and confirmed that he will be out for a significant period of time.

Burn was injured during the first-half of that game following a tackle by Nordi Mukiele. He was initially able to carry on for a few moments before then being withdrawn from the pitch.

Burn was then taken to hospital after struggling to breathe in the changing rooms and it was revealed later that he had suffered rib injuries and a punctured lung. Speaking to the media ahead of his side’s clash with Fulham in the Carabao Cup, Howe addressed Burn’s injury and the impact his absence will have on his side in the coming weeks.

“I was sort of under the radar really in terms of reviewing the game, the importance of Dan and losing him just for everything that he brings to the team. That was a big blow for us.

“I think he's been excellent in recent weeks. So yeah, it's a rib problem with some issue with his lungs.

“We wish him well. It will probably be around four to six weeks.”

Newcastle United’s defensive injury crisis

A four to six weeks timescale on Burn’s recovery will see him ruled-out until at least mid-January, with an absence until the end of next month a possibility. On the lower end of that injury timescale, Burn will certainly miss tomorrow’s Carabao Cup game against Fulham, Premier League games against Chelsea, Manchester United, Burnley, Crystal Palace, Leeds United and Bournemouth in the FA Cup.

Matches against Wolves, PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League and a clash with Aston Villa follow those and there is a worry that Burn could also miss those matches as well. With Sven Botman, Kieran Trippier and Emil Krafth also sidelined, plus Jamaal Lascelles only having just returned from a muscle injury, a defensive injury crisis is beginning to form at the club.

Fortunately, Howe still has the numbers to name a back four, but with two of those players, namely Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall, also returning from injury issues of their own, Howe has admitted that whilst he will have to pay close attention to the pair in the coming weeks, he has very few options to be able to rest and rotate his current fit defensive options: “I'd love to look after them, but I don't know how we can with the scale of games that we've got.

“So I think I'll speak to them on an individual basis and see how they are at the moment. They're OK.

“They're good. The beauty of it is they're young.

“They're very, very good athletes, they've got great attitudes. They want to play.

“Of course, we need to speak to our performance team and make sure that they're fit to play. But with every team selection, you're putting people on the pitch and there's a risk of injury. But we're getting to a dangerous sort of point with our defensive structure.”
