Manchester United have no desire to sell Bruno Fernandes amid fresh speculation over his future at Old Trafford. Fernandes rejected an approach from Saudi Arabia last summer, but his future made headlines again on Tuesday after the release of an interview with the midfielder in Portugal.

Speaking to Canal 11, Fernandes suggested United wanted him to join Al-Hilal in the summer window. The United captain also suggested the club's board lacked the "courage" to make the decision for him.

Fernandes added: "From the club's side, I felt a bit like, 'If you leave, it's not so bad for us'. It hurts me a lot. More than hurting, it makes me sad because I'm a player who they have nothing to criticise about. I'm always available, and I always play - good or bad - I give my all."

Club sources have reiterated the leadership was clear throughout the summer that Fernandes was a key part of the future plans, pointing to his own quote from a sit-down with Manchester-based reporters in October, in which he claimed that the club echoed Ruben Amorim's desire for him to stay.

The Manchester Evening News understand there is no desire for Fernandes to leave United ahead of a summer transfer window in which investment will be made to strengthen the midfield.

United considered a move for Carlos Baleba last summer. Brighton valued the midfielder in excess of £100million, and United focused their resources on strengthening other areas of the team. Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson and Crystal Palace's Adam Wharton have also been tracked.

Casemiro's contract expires at the end of the season. There is the option of a 12-month extension, but triggering another year would ensure the 33-year-old remains the dressing room's highest earner.

Although Casemiro is expected to leave after his contract expires, he has become an important player for Amorim again this season, leading to suggestions that he could continue at United.

United are planning to strengthen their midfield at the end of the season. The Reds were content with not signing a midfielder last summer because club chiefs believed the current options were strong enough to secure European football.

Fernandes' contract expires in 2027, and there is the option of extending by a further 12 months.
