Coventry City have secured the services of highly-rated Sky Blues Academy star George Shepherd with the teenager signing his first professional contract.
Shepherd was linked with interest from Manchester United barely an hour and half after the final whistle of City’s victory over Blackburn in mid-October when he was named on Frank Lampard’s bench.
The midfielder, who has just turned 17, had earned his place in the first team’s matchday squad after impressing the head coach after stepping up to train with the senior players on occasions over recent months.
Shepherd, who’s also a Sky Blues fan, has progressed through the ranks and impressed with his performances in the Under 18s and Under 21s.
On signing his new deal, Shepherd said: “I’m buzzing to sign my first professional contract.
“I’m a Coventry lad and I can’t wait to get started. I want to work hard, get that debut, make a name for myself and do what I’ve always wanted to do, which is play for Coventry.”
Head coach Lampard said: “I’m pleased that George has signed his first professional contract.
“He’s impressed me with his training, his work ethic and he’s a really good lad. He’s a Coventry fan and a local boy so I’m delighted for him.”
