A Liverpool fan could not resist the chance to aim a dig at Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes during a debate on whether the Red Devils midfielder should be considered an all-time Premier League great.
The United captain was a big talking point on Tuesday after scoring a stunning free-kick as the Red Devils were held to a 4-4 draw with Bournemouth at Old Trafford on Monday. It is a result that saw them go above Arne Slot’s side on goal difference.
During the Sky Sports Fan Club show on Sky Sports News - which airs every weekday between 10am and 12pm - supporters were invited to make live phone-calls over the debate if Fernandes is a Premier League great.
As calls came in, it was soon apparent that one supporter phoning in was not a United fan and that he was not calling to agree with the argument about Fernandes.
Former Southampton and QPR striker Charlie Austin was in the studio listening and said: “As soon as you heard the [Scouse] accent, you knew where it was going!”
The 7-0 win at Anfield will live long in the memory for many Liverpool fans, with the Reds scoring six second-half goals in front of the Kop to hand United the joint-biggest defeat in their history.
The Red Devils lost 7-0 way back in 1926 and again in 1930 but had not been beaten by seven goals in living memory. Cody Gakpo opened the scoring while Mo Salah and Darwin Nunez scored twice each in the second half. Gakpo also netted twice with Roberto Firmino capping off the win with the final goal.
"He is holding his hands up asking: 'Why am I not coming off?'" Gary Neville said during the game, before later adding: "I have had enough of Fernandes throwing his arms around, whinging at everyone, holding his face when touched.
"That wasn't a captain's performance from a Manchester United player and I am sure Erik ten Hag will deal with that. I am sure normal service will be resumed but they have to own that because that is a disgrace."
Another former United captain Roy Keane added: "Fernandes' body language today was nothing short of disgraceful."
BBC Sport later reported they had been told that Fernandes did not ask to come off.
