Danny Simpson says nobody realises one thing about 'nightmare to play against' Antoine Semenyo

Antoine Semenyo is one of the most sought-after players currently in the Premier League, and Manchester United are expected to be in this race.

Monday saw Manchester United and Bournemouth draw 4-4, and in the background of this rollercoaster game was the audition of transfer target Antoine Semenyo.

The Ghanaian forward is wanted by the Premier League’s biggest clubs in 2026, but at Old Trafford, he had a hot and cold night.

Bournemouth’s number 24 scored, but Semenyo also had a potential red card moment, in which he grabbed Diogo Dalot’s neck after the Portuguese defender had taken him out.

Despite this moment of seeing red, United are accelerating interest in Semenyo, with his £65m release clause looking like excellent value.

Danny Simpson says Antoine Semenyo has one unsung quality

Semenyo was singled out by Amorim pre-game, labelling him a ‘special player’, and he was proven right in the game.

But ahead of the game, MUTV pundit Danny Simpson, who played with Semenyo at Bristol City in 2021/22, had also heaped praise on the Bournemouth star.

“He’s had to work so hard. Left foot, right foot, power, that doesn’t happen overnight.

“What he’s doing now, his numbers performances, were right up there with the best this season, if you want me to be honest, I’m really happy for him.

“He’s put himself up amongst the better attacking players in the Premier League with his performances of late.

“You don’t realise how quick he is. When he’s got the ball, he glides. He can go both ways, as a full-back, as a defender, he’s a nightmare to play against, he can go either way.”

United certainly learned how quick Semenyo is when he shone on Monday night.

Gary Neville impressed by Semenyo performance against Manchester United

Semenyo proved that pre-game focus on him was right as he caught the eye, being among Bournemouth’s best, and his goal was a great finish.

After watching his goal on commentary for Sky Sports, Gary Neville also heaped praise on Semenyo.

“There’s an inquest going on, but he is a special player. Shaw gets barged out of the way by Kluivert. He has to be stronger there.

“He leaves his teammates in a position where they invite Semenyo to shoot. It’s a wonderful finish. It’s everything you want in teaching a young forward.”

The dream would be Semenyo on the left as a wing-back in the same way Amad was against Bournemouth from the right. However, it remains to be seen if United can afford this in January.
