Adam Smith: Handball for United equaliser "clearly hit my shoulder"

Referee Simon Hooper blew to award a free kick as he adjudged the ball to strike Smith on the arm, with the [Cherries](http://www.bournemouthecho.co.uk/sport/cherries/clubnews/?ref=au) leading 3-2 with just under 15 minutes to play.

Bruno Fernandes converted from the free kick, finding the top corner off the underside of the bar, before United retook the lead two minutes later.

Speaking to BBC Radio Solent after the game, the Cherries skipper admitted there were some mixed emotions after a dramatic 4-4 draw at the Theatre of Dreams, with Junior Kroupi scoring the Cherries equaliser with six minutes to play.

“Obviously, we started the game not very well and they were on top, but we knew that coming in,” he said.

“It's a tough place to come, and we had to ride it out for 20 minutes and then the gaffer made a few changes and I felt we were comfortable after that.

“Got back into the game and conceded a rubbish goal just before half time. That kind of annoyed us.

“And, yeah, obviously, second half, we started great, got a goal straight away and then kicked on from there.

“And no surprise that the decision went against us again. The ball clearly hit my shoulder. Honestly, I don't even know what to say anymore. I give up.

“He's one yard in front of me. So I said to the ref, what do you want to do with my arms?

“He said he doesn't want to talk to me right now.

“So I think he knew as soon as I give it that he made a mistake and then obviously it's a great free kick, but still, that's what happens when you're a club like Bournemouth, I suppose.”

Smith praised the character in the Cherries side, as they came from behind on three occasions to earn a point.

Even despite going behind late on, he hailed the team’s belief to come back and earn a point.

“That just shows what type of character we've got in this team,” he said.

“We could have easily just folded after conceding two quick goals when we was in the lead.

“And then I think a lot of teams would have just felt sorry for themselves, we didn't.

“Kroupi’s quality showed there. Even at the end, I think we were disappointed that \[David\] Brooksy couldn't finish one of them chances.

“I know he's gutted in there, but, yeah, I felt we should have won the game in the end.”
