Manchester United defender Harry Amass is attracting plenty of attention ahead of the January transfer window, despite Ruben Amorim claiming that he is "struggling" this season. Amass is currently on loan with Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship, but could switch teams in January.

The left-back joined Wednesday on a four-month loan deal on transfer deadline day. He has settled well, making 15 appearances for the club so far, contributing one goal and one assist.

The United boss raised eyebrows ahead of the Bournemouth game when he said "Amass is now struggling in the Championship" while discussing the situation with the club's academy graduates. The club later clarified that Amorim was referring to the Owls' league position, not Amass' own fortunes, but Wednesday may struggle to hold onto him in the New Year.

Despite Amass earning the Yorkshire club's player of the month award for November, they are rooted to the bottom of the Championship on -9 points following two points deductions and a solitary win in 20 games. Manager Henrik Pedersen has made it clear that his side want to extend Amass' loan deal, but that decision could be taken out of their hands.

The Daily Mail reports that Stoke and Millwall are both keen on signing Amass in January and United could be tempted to move their young player to the top end of the Championship. Both Stoke and Millwall are currently in the play-off places and could offer a more challenging environment for Amass, who is behind Patrick Dorgu, Luke Shaw and Diogo Dalot at his parent club.

In total, it is believed around 12 clubs have expressed an interest in signing Amass in January. But the player himself is very happy at Wednesday and United may decide not to disrupt his momentum mid-campaign, even though relegation to League One looking is all but certain for his loan side.

Amorim has not been forthcoming with opportunities for youngsters since arriving over a year ago at Old Trafford. Amass, Tyler Fredricson and Chido Obi are the only three United academy graduates to have made their first-team debuts for the club under the Portuguese manager, who hinted that he hasn't been impressed by the standard of the players progressing through the system.

Asked about the situation given the ongoing struggles for Kobbie Mainoo to get minutes, Amorim said: "He (Toby Collyer) played (for United). He's from the academy. He played here. He went to West Bromwich. He's not playing. He played for Manchester United. So sometimes it's not because he's from the academy or whatever.

“It's the situation, what's happened. I don't know what is going to be the future (for Mainoo). Let's see after this match. Amass is now struggling in the Championship. Chido is not always a starter in under-21s. All these guys played when a lot of people were saying sack the manager!”
