MATT Hamshaw is full of optimism that Rotherham United will hang on to Premier League loan star Dan Gore during the new-year transfer window.

The young Manchester United midfielder has shone for the Millers during his first season in senior football and been one of the top performers in League One.

Gore likes life in South Yorkshire and his parent club are pleased with his development – and that has left Hamshaw brimming with hope that the 21-year-old will remain at AESSEAL New York for the whole campaign.

“Our plan is, he stays here,” the boss told the Advertiser. “He wants to stay here, he’s enjoying playing games. For a young player, it’s important he has a 40-plus game season, so people can see he’s been fit for a full year.

“I think that Man United want that, it’s what we want. If he’s here on February 1 I’ll be delighted.”

Hamshaw is aware the player's form won't have gone unnoticed elsewhere and accepts that a bigger club could try to take him away from S60 when the January trading begins.

“Dan is enjoying it here,” he said. “I’m in regular contact with Man United and they seem happy with him here. But if anyone comes in with an offer that blows us out of the water, then he’s going to go.

“Sometimes, it’s hard with loans. You want your loan players to come in and really do well – and then when they do well you might lose them in January.”

Gore was hit by a quad injury early in a loan spell at Port Vale in 2024 and played only once before heading back to Old Trafford. He then suffered further bad luck during a temporary stint with Rotherham last season when a foot fracture restricted him to three outings.

Hamshaw saw enough to bring him back to New York in the summer and the player has blossomed, making 26 appearances and missing only one league game, at Doncaster Rovers, when he was at the birth of his first child.

He last week: “Listen, I'm really happy here. I just take it game by game and focus on the matches that are coming up. We'll just see what happens.”

Hamshaw fully appreciates how much of a boost it will be if the Millers manage to keep such a talent in their squad.

“If we get to the end of January and Dan's still here, it would be like a great signing,” he said.
