Man United and Man City have both been linked to the Premier League star, who could be on the move in January.

Whereas Man City will be keen to strengthen Pep Guardiola’s squad with the hope they can overtake Arsenal’s Premier League title charge, as they sit just two points behind the Gunners after 16 matches.

Both Manchester clubs have been linked to signing the same player in January, who is expected to have a £65m release clause in his contract. It is understood that United are still in the race for him, despite several reports claiming otherwise, but both clubs will have to battle against Liverpool for their target.

Man United ‘still in the race’ for Semenyo

The Red Devils were previously linked to signing Semenyo when it was first revealed that he would have a £65m release clause in his contract in January. However, it was claimed that they were unlikely to sign the Bournemouth winger, but it seems the reports now suggest otherwise.

It is understood that Liverpool are the frontrunners to sign Semenyo, as the Reds have already ‘agreed personal terms’, and they view the winger as a future replacement for Mo Salah. Man City are also keen to sign the Bournemouth star, and will also battle Liverpool and United for his signature in the January transfer window.

Semenyo could help replace Mbeumo

As far as Man United are concerned, they will be frustrated that Bryan Mbeumo has now left for AFCON. The Cameroon international has arguably been United’s best player this season, and so Amorim will have to cope without him, potentially until late January.

Mbeumo has scored six goals and provided one assist in the Premier League, similar numbers to Semenyo, who has netted seven goals and provided one assist for Bournemouth. Both Mbeumo and Semenyo are difference-maker players, who can both be talisman-level players for United.

If the Red Devils were to sign Semenyo in January and beat Man City and Liverpool, they would have their replacement for Mbeumo until he returns from AFCON. However, they could also form a dangerous attacking partnership when the two players eventually play alongside each other upon Mbeumo's return.

It isn’t understood yet whether United would need to make any sales before signing Semenyo, but they are expecting financial returns from the loan moves of Marcus Rashford and Rasmus Hojlund come the end of the season, when their clubs pay the clauses to buy them permanently.
