The French midfielder returned to the Red Devils in 2016 for a record £89million and remained at the club for six years until 2022.

He played alongside the current United captain for his final two years, with them combining for 11 goals in that time.

Pogba's career at Old Trafford was marred by issues with Jose Mourinho before a revival under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The now 32-year-old departed at the end of his contract three years ago, while Fernandes has stayed to become a leading figure.

They have gone on very different paths since playing together, but Fernandes still sees Pogba as one of the best.

He also came up against the World Cup winner while playing for Udinese and Sampdoria in Italy, as he starred for Juventus.

And looking back at those days, Fernandes picked his ex-teammate for his dream five-a-side line-up when speaking to Man United legend Rio Ferdinand on the Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast.

He explained: "I will put one that I think everyone has regrets of not seeing the best of him, that is Pogba. I need to put him there. I’ve seen the best of him because I played against him in Italy.

"He has everything. He could do everything as a midfielder. He could run, he could recover balls, he could score goals, he could give assists, he could head the ball, he could win duels, he could do everything.

"He’s the most complete midfielder that I’ve seen for a long, long time that could do all these things."

Fernandes continued: "Unfortunately, I’ve just seen that at Juve and I couldn’t see him as often here at the club because of injuries, of many other things. But I’ve played against him in Juve; he was

unbelievable.

"It was crazy, and I had to mark him. Look at me, my size-wise, I was at the time 68–69 kilos. Paul was already a beast.

"Any diss, I was like… it was like a kid, like, stay back, like I do to my kids, 'Stay there.' He was doing that to me."

Who else did Fernandes select?

Joining Pogba in Fernandes' dream five-a-side team is Portugal's iconic centre-back, Pepe.

Explaining his selection to Ferdinand, the Man United captain said: "He’s going cycling, cycling kilometres and kilometres. I’m done with seeing photos of him on Instagram cycling.

"So Pepe, just ahead of Raphael Varane, just because I played more with Pepe than I played with Rafa.

"But friendship-wise, Rafa was like one of my best friends here. Friendship-wise in the national team, when I came, Pepe was one of

the ones who helped me the most. So I need to put him there."

In midfield, alongside Pogba, Fernandes picked Spanish maestro Juan Mata, speaking extremely highly of his ex-United teammate.

"I will put Juan Mata because he was one of the most special players I’ve played with in terms of technical ability, he’s probably one of the best," the 31-year-old said. "And then in terms of personal, he’s by far one of the best."

One obvious pick followed, with Fernandes selecting Cristiano Ronaldo, due to him being the world's highest-scoring player ever.

He has played 118 times with the footballing icon, with the pair combining for nine goals in total for Portugal and Man United.

Then, as another striker in his five-a-side team, Fernandes went back to his Serie A days to pick out a legend.

"I will put [Antonio] Di Natale," the United skipper said to Ferdinand.

"When we talk about loyalty, that’s also a guy, yeah. He could have

gone Juventus, he could have gone to, I don’t know, any other clubs, and decided to stay at Udinese for him and for his family.

"He wanted to stay there. He had an amazing career. I think he’s top five goal scorers in Italy, Serie A, and that’s something unbelievable

because he played for a team that struggles sometimes to be almost in relegation battles and stuff, and he still put numbers up there always, every year, like close to 20s.

"And he’s being there with [Francesco] Totti, and I think he’s the one with less games and like more goals, like ratio-wise.
