Atletico Madrid are reportedly interested in a Man United star who is set to leave at the end of the season.

Man United’s transfer business over the past few seasons hasn’t been the best, but it is fair to say that things are improving under Ruben Amorim. Signing the likes of Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Senne Lammens was a good move in the summer, and they are climbing up the table.

However, Amorim was also very keen to offload certain players, with the likes of Alejandro Garnacho, Rasmus Hojlund and Marcus Rashford all a part of his ‘bomb squad’ in the summer. Garnacho joined Chelsea permanently, whereas Hojlund and Rashford left on loan.

Atletico Madrid ‘move quickly’ for Rashford

According to reports in Spain, Barcelona’s rivals Atletico Madrid are now eyeing up a move for Rashford, should Barca opt against paying his £26m buy option. So far, Rashford has really impressed in La Liga, scoring two goals and providing seven assists in 16 matches for Hansi Flick’s side.

The La Liga giants are likely to sign him permanently, but according to Spanish outlet Fichajes, Atletico are looking to move quickly and make a move for Rashford, as they have been impressed by his performances since leaving Old Trafford.

The report says that the Madrid side views the attacker as a ‘perfect fit’ for Diego Simeone’s system in the Spanish capital, and that they could try to hijack any deal that Barcelona aims to complete come the end of the season.

This still feels unlikely, as Rashford seems to be very happy at the Nou Camp, but what a story it would be if Atletico were able to pull it off.

Man United could swap Rashford for Gallagher

Instantly, there seems to be an opportunity for Man United to strike a deal with Atletico Madrid, and look to sign Gallagher on a swap deal, something that would help them in the short-term, as they need a midfielder, and the long-term, as Gallagher is just 25 years old.

The former Chelsea star joined Atletico Madrid for £39m in August 2024, after being ousted by Blues manager Enzo Maresca. Since then, Gallagher has made 74 appearances, scoring six goals and providing seven assists.

He has performed well for the Spanish side, but hasn’t been getting the minutes that he would have wanted, and so could be on the move in January. Man United could decide to consider offering Rashford in a straight swap for Gallagher rather than selling him to Barcelona in the summer.
