Liverpool could miss out on signing a key transfer target
Liverpool seemed to sign all their preferred targets in the summer although it looks like they will face a tougher fight in January to land their top names.
The late collapse of the Marc Guehi transfer has seen some of the biggest names in European football circle with Real Madrid and Bayern Munich continuing to be mentioned as possible suitors. The more time that ticks by on the Crystal Palace skipper’s contract, the more he becomes affordable for those who can afford his wage demands. Guehi will also be looking for assurances that he will be a regular starter which might yet be the biggest influence on his decision.
Contact made for Antoine Semenyo
It is a similar story for Antoine Semenyo who has the traditional top six all monitoring his situation after scoring seven goals for Bournemouth so far this season. Reports that the 25-year old has agreed personal terms with Liverpool appear to be premature even if Anfield, from the outset, has been the winger’s preferred destination.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Fabrizio Romano reported the latest news on the Semenyo transfer rumours, revealing that competition is hotting up in the race for the 25-year old’s signature. According to the Italian transfer journalist, United and City are leading the race for his signature as Liverpool and Tottenham continue to monitor the winger’s situation and weigh up a possible transfer: “City and United both called in the last 48 hours,” Romano said.
“Then Tottenham, in the last few days, have spent a lot of time in trying to attack the situation for Semenyo. And there is Liverpool… interested since November but, again, this depends on what happens with Mohamed Salah and also Liverpool’s financial intentions because they could have different priorities in January.” The Salah to Saudi Arabia speculation won’t stop with the 33-year old being away with Egypt on African Cup of Nations duty with Semenyo looking like the obvious replacement on paper.
Liverpool rival make first move for Semenyo
Liverpool and Slot don’t appear to be actively chasing Salah out the door with the manager giving a spiky response after the win over Brighton when asked if the veteran winger wanted to stay at Anfield, via the club’s official website: “I think you already know the answer to that. What has been said between the two of us in that conversation stays between us. And I think what you see is what you get to know, and that was that he was in the squad and my first substitution. And all of the other things that have been said in that conversation, I never speak about when I speak to Virgil or Mo or any other player. I never tell you guys what we talk about.”
Man United, on the other hand, have made the first move as they look to take Semenyo to Old Trafford by not only getting in touch with Bournemouth but by also trying to sell Joshua Zirkzee with Roma said to be interested in the Netherlands international who has struggled to adapt to the Premier League and Ruben Amorim’s tactics. The Corriere dello Sport claims that United’s asking price for a permanent deal will need to drop and that a loan move has all but been ruled out. Whether Semenyo would want to play as a wing-back under Amorim is another story given that he currently has a virtual free role at Bournemouth and, at Liverpool, he would be playing on the right or left of a front three.
