Bryan Mbeumo in AFCON chaos as Man Utd player called up by wrong manager

Ruben Amorim's situation at Manchester United is far from calm, but Bryan Mbeumo may consider it as such as he joins his Cameroon team-mates. Just as the summer recruit was settling into life at Old Trafford, he's now leaving to represent Morocco in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

However, the situation with the Indomitable Lions has become tumultuous, with Mbeumo receiving call-ups from two different managers. His ex-United team-mate and international captain Andre Onana finds himself in a similar predicament, having been selected for one Cameroon team but not the other.

Marc Brys, the country's former manager who was dismissed by Cameroonian FA president Samuel Eto'o, maintains that he still holds the position, despite David Pagou being appointed earlier this month.

As the competition, which kicks off on December 21, approaches, two separate Cameroon AFCON squad lists have surfaced. Luckily for Mbeumo, as one of his nation's standout players, he features on both.

The same cannot be said for Onana, who departed United for a loan spell at Trabzonspor following a disappointing start to the season. Brys was shown the door by the Cameroon FA shortly after Eto'o, the legendary ex-Barcelona and Inter Milan star, was re-elected as Cameroonian FA president with 97% of the vote.

He and Brys endured a turbulent relationship, which originated from the Cameroonian sports ministry's decision to appoint him as manager rather than Eto'o. When Eto'o secured re-election, he interpreted his majority as authorisation to sack the Belgian.

ESPN claim that a heated meeting between Eto'o and his committee concluded with them accusing Brys of "11 infractions" spanning "disrespectful" and "biased" comments, "professional misconduct" and "manipulation" of players, where they specifically charge him with attempting to turn them against the country's FA.

Despite this, Brys maintains he has received no official correspondence from the Cameroonian FA concerning his dismissal, even though Pagou is now in position. He has continued working as normal, though this situation could hardly be more extraordinary.

He submitted his own squad list for the competition, including Onana alongside other seasoned Cameroon stars Vincent Aboubakar, Eric Choupu-Moting and Michael Ngadeu-Ngadjui. On the same day, Pagou released his own squad for the tournament, excluding the aforementioned quartet.

Last week, uncertainty prevailed over whether the omitted Onana, Aboubaker, Choupu-Moting and Ngadeu-Ngadjui would actually participate in North Africa. A Cameroonian official has clarified in the same source that any player appearing on Brys' list, but absent from Pagou's, will not be involved.

The former manager of Cameroon, who insists he is still in charge, has expressed his anger over the current situation. He specifically targeted Eto'o, alleging that the seasoned quartet were sidelined because they challenged the authority of the former Chelsea striker.

Speaking to Afrik Foot, he said: "Eto'o has left out important players, and leaders, because he's obviously the one who made this list. How can you go to such a tournament without a world-class goalkeeper, or without Aboubakar? Because these are players with character, who stand up to the president."

Cameroon's tournament begins with a match against Gabon on Christmas Eve, followed by games against the Ivory Coast on December 28 and Mozambique on New Year's Eve.
