National World Top Stories Update Thursday 18 December, 2025

Manchester United may have secretly changed their minds about plans to sign a new attacker in January.

Manager Ruben Amorim has managed to steady the ship at Old Trafford this season, with the Red Devils currently sixth in the Premier League table.

On Monday, December 15, Man United drew 4-4 with AFC Bournemouth in a thrilling contest, with the likes of Amad, Bruno Fernandes and Matheus Cunha all getting on the scoresheet for the hosts.

But the former, along with Bryan Mbeumo and Noussair Mazraoui, has left the side this week to play in the African Cup of Nations (AFCON), leaving Amorim’s attacking reinforcements stretched thin.

Prior to the game against Bournemouth, the Portuguese manager denied having interest in signing Cherries star Antoine Semenyo, despite describing him as a “special” footballer.

It comes as Semenyo’s £65m release clause is set to come into effect in the January transfer window, putting the Premier League’s elite clubs on high alert.

According to the Irish Independent, Amorim may have already u-turned on his Semenyo decision. The outlet has claimed that Man United will now go “all out” to sign the Ghana international next month.

They face fierce competition, however - according to multiple sources, Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool are also interested in the winger.

Semenyo, 25, has not travelled to AFCON as Ghana did not qualify for the tournament, meaning he could be an immediate plug-and-play option for Man United, should he choose to leave the Vitality Stadium in January.
