Manchester United have been told by former top-flight referee Mark Clattenburg why a complaint would create "problems" in the Premier League. Reports this week have seen United express frustration about some refereeing decisions in the top-flight this season.

The Daily Mail reported, on Thursday, that United wish to speak with PGMOL (Professional Game Match Officials Limited) chief Howard Webb after becoming "increasingly frustrated" by some decisions which have gone against them so far that term.

Head coach Ruben Amorim is reportedly not involved in seeking such answers from the PGMOL, with Webb also admitting that United were on the receiving end of one wrong decision earlier this season.

This came in the 3-1 defeat against Brentford in September, with Webb said to have acknowledged that defender Nathan Collins should have been shown a red card for a challenge on Bryan Mbeumo in the penalty area.

Clattenburg, who has since retiring been working as a pundit to provide a referee's view on key decisions during matches, has explained why United's frustrations towards refereeing decisions could have implications across the Premier League.

"All clubs are having issues with referee decisions, and they know each place they move up the Premier League is worth over £1million," Clattenburg told United in Focus.

"The league this season is as tight as it's ever been, and each win can move many places. We saw two seasons ago when Nottingham Forest complained; it had a negative impact on the club.

"When one of the biggest clubs complains about the standards of refereeing, then this will create problems in the Premier League and PGMOL.

"The world we're living in now, we can't accept mistakes that are having a financial impact on the clubs."
