Report: Liverpool submit bid to sign 'really good' full-back alongside Manchester United

The possibility of Liverpool improving their defence in the January transfer window has been mooted.

Marc Guehi is said to be of interest to the Premier League champions following their failure to agree a deal with Crystal Palace in the summer.

However, Jamie Carragher thinks Liverpool may not sign Guehi and could turn their attention to other targets.

Ahead of the January transfer window opening, Arne Slot was asked about the Reds signing a defender, but his answer was pretty cryptic.

Federico Chiesa is being disrespected by Arne Slot! How would you use the Italian vs Tottenham?

“It just doesn’t seem like he trusts him [Chiesa]. I know when they lost at Plymouth, Slot was furious with Chiesa.”

Despite Slot giving little away, however, it has been reported that Liverpool have made a bid for a defender.

Liverpool submit bid for Yisa Alao

Currently, the Reds have two senior left-backs in Milos Kerkez and Andy Robertson.

However, Robertson is out of contract in 2026 and could leave Anfield next summer.

Liverpool may need to start planning for the future as a result, and have already identified one young prospect.

The Star reports that the Merseyside outfit, along with Manchester United, have submitted an offer to Sheffield Wednesday for young full-back Yisa Alao.

Their offers are not thought to have been accepted at this stage, but there is a suggestion that player sales may be needed at Hillsborough due to their current financial issues.

Sheffield Wednesday are yet to find a new owner, and if one is not found soon, sales may be required to keep the club afloat.

Who is Yisa Alao?

Alao is unlikely to be a name that most Liverpool fans are familiar with.

Born in Doncaster, the 17-year-old is a product of Sheffield Wednesday’s academy but is yet to truly break into their senior side.

So far, he has played one minute of Championship football and featured for 62 minutes across two Carabao Cup outings earlier this term.

But despite his limited minutes, Alao has still received praise from manager Henrik Pedersen, who called him ‘really, really, good’.

Speaking in September, as per The Star, he said: “As soon as he came on, they tried to bring extra people to his side.

“But he grew through the battle and wow. One of the important skills you need to have as a young player is to adapt; to adapt to the level, to new players and to everything. It was really, really good.

“He is a great young player. Wow. We have to be very careful with him. Just to have a normal training week at a Championship level is very tough for him.”
