Newcastle United 2-0 Crystal Palace: Joe Buck match reaction
Newcastle United parted ways with a number of senior players in the summer, but what has happened to them since?
Newcastle United spent big in the summer to sign the likes of Yoane Wissa, Nick Woltemade and Anthony Elanga, with their transfer activity fuelled by the sale of Alexander Isak.
Liverpool paid a British record £125million to sign Isak in the summer following a long and heated transfer battle. Of course, he wasn’t the only exit from St. James’ Park this summer, with the Magpies getting fees for Lloyd Kelly and Sean Longstaff, while the likes of Martin Dubravka and Callum Wilson also departed. But what has happened to the players who left Newcastle in the summer? Before attention turns to January madness, let’s take a look.
Alexander Isak
Joined: Liverpool
Liverpool moved Heaven and Earth to sign Isak, but it’s safe to say things haven’t gone well for him at Anfield so far. The Sweden international scored just two goals in his first 15 appearances for the Reds, and then broke his leg in the process of scoring his third against Tottenham just before Christmas. A lengthy spell on the sidelines awaits.

Lloyd Kelly
Joined: Juventus
Lloyd Kelly made a shock loan switch to Juventus in February, with the defender proving such a success that he made the move permanent in the summer. Kelly has started 16 of Juve’s 18 Serie A matches so far this season, helping the Old Lady sit fourth, just six points off leaders Inter in a close title race.
Sean Longstaff
It was an emotional goodbye for Sean Longstaff, who left his boyhood club after 19 years and 214 appearances to join Leeds United. Longstaff has a goal and two assists in 12 Premier League appearances and 10 starts so far, and returned to the squad as an unused substitute against Manchester United at the weekend after a calf injury.
Callum Wilson
Joined: West Ham
Callum Wilson joined West Ham in the summer following the expiry of his Newcastle contract. The England international has been in and out of the starting line-up, but has scored four goals for the struggling Hammers so far.
Isaac Hayden
Joined: QPR
After a series of loans, Isaac Hayden joined QPR on a free transfer in the summer, but has clocked up just 478 minutes of Championship action so far, mostly appearing from the bench.
Martin Dubravka
Joined: Burnley
Popular goalkeeper Martin Dubravka is now the first-choice stopper at Burnley, replacing James Trafford after his move to Manchester City. Dubravka has conceded 39 goals and kept just three clean sheets in 20 appearances, though he’s often been the only thing keeping the Clarets in games.
Odysseas Vlachodimos
Joined: Sevilla (loan)
Newcastle’s ‘PSR’ signing joined Sevilla on loan in the summer and has been their No.1 since. However, he had a day to forget in a 3-0 defeat at home to Levante at the weekend, leaving Sevilla 11th in the table.
Matt Targett
Joined: Middlesbrough (loan)
Matt Targett was a solid servant to Newcastle, but there was too much quality ahead of him in the left-back pecking order. He’s become Middlesbrough’s first-choice option since joining on loan, registering two goals and two assists in 23 Championship appearances so far for the promotion chasers.
Antonio Cordero
Joined: Westerlo (loan)
Teenage Spanish winger Antonio Cordero joined Westerlo on loan in the summer following his transfer from Malaga, but failed to start a single Belgian Pro League game before returning to Newcastle. Cordero is now back in Spain on loan with La Liga 2 side Cadiz and made his debut in a 38-minute cameo against Deportivo on Sunday.
Joe White
Joined: Leyton Orient (loan)
Joe White has played just 319 minutes across eight appearances on loan at Leyton Orient. Now 22 years old, the attacking midfielder needs to find a solution to his lack of game time soon.
Jamal Lewis
Joined: Preston North End
Jamal Lewis was released at the end of his contract in the summer, having not played for Newcastle since the final day of the 2022/23 campaign. Lewis remained a free agent for a while before joining Preston North End in October, making 10 appearances in the Championship so far.
