Everything you need to know about Robbie Savage at Macclesfield FC
Founding the club: Robbie Savage joined the project in October 2020 alongside businessman Rob Smethurst to launch Macclesfield FC from the ashes of Macclesfield Town. He played a vital role in building the club's infrastructure from scratch, including the renovation of the Leasing.com Stadium and the creation of a new squad.
Initial role: Savage became a board member and was appointed director of football, where he oversaw the club’s footballing operations and recruitment. His primary focus was to bridge the gap between the fans and the new board while securing the club's place in the football pyramid.
Self-appointment as manager: In June 2024, Savage made the bold decision to appoint himself as manager following the departure of Michael Clegg. It was the former Premier League star's first managerial job.
Record-breaking achievements: During the 2024/25 season, Savage led Macclesfield to a historic promotion from the Northern Premier League Premier Division. His side broke the all-time points record with 109 points and scored 109 goals, winning the league by a staggering 26 points.
Reasons for exit: Savage officially left his role as manager on July 1, 2025, to take up the vacant manager job at Forest Green Rovers. He stated that the opportunity to manage at a higher level in the National League was a challenge he could not turn down.
Continued involvement: Despite leaving his day-to-day coaching role, Savage remains a part-owner of Macclesfield FC. Upon being named Forest Green boss, he shared his intention to sell his Macclesfield shares to avoid possible conflicts of interest and focus on his managerial career.
Macclesfield successor: Following Savage's exit, the club appointed John Rooney, the younger brother of Wayne Rooney, as the new head coach. Rooney had previously been a star player for the Silkmen and stepped up to lead the team into the National League North.
FA Cup magic: Macclesfield FC have reached the FA Cup Third Round, where they will host Premier League side Crystal Palace. The match is scheduled to take place this coming Saturday, January 10, 2026.
Kick-off time: The game will kick off at 12.15pm GMT and is a massive clash for the non-league side. As the reigning FA Cup holders, Palace will be visiting Macclesfield's sold-out Leasing.com Stadium.
How to watch on TV: The match will be broadcast live across the UK on BBC One and iPlayer. It will also be available to watch on TNT Sports 1 and the discovery+ app for those with a valid subscription.
