Man United are searching for their next permanent manager following Ruben Amorim’s dismissal

Amorim leaves Old Trafford after 14 months in charge, following a ‘particularly hostile’ meeting with director of football Jason Wilcox. He was sacked after his explosive post-Leeds United press conference at the start of the month.

United’s plan is to appoint an interim manager until the end of the season but they are also searching for their next full-time figure.

Latest news on Man United search for new manager

After the turbulent Amorim era, United are shooting for the moon when it comes to their next permanent manager. A few names have emerged in the days following Amorim’s dismissal, including Roberto De Zerbi and England boss Thomas Tuchel.

According to Fichajes, the Red Devils are now sounding out a potential move for Paris Saint-Germain boss Luis Enrique. The report claims that they have emerged as ‘strong contenders’ to coax the Spaniard away from the French capital this summer.

Enrique’s name ‘makes sense’ for the Premier League club. United are not rushing into any permanent decisions between now and the end of the season, as they aim to convince a ‘top-level coach’ to get on board with their long-term project.

The report describes Enrique as having a ‘restless personality’, who does not become complacent after reaching the top. The 55-year-old won nine trophies with Barcelona between 2014 and 2017, before his move to the Spanish national team.

Enrique joined PSG in July 2023 and in that time, he’s led the team to ten titles, including their first ever Champions League trophy, and his second in the tournament.

While the Fichajes report states that while there are currently ‘no confirmation of advanced negotiations’, Enrique’s potential move to Old Trafford would be ‘one of the biggest bombshells of 2026’.

Who will become the Man United interim manager?

Both Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Michael Carrick have been linked with a return to Old Trafford to step in as the club’s interim manager. Manchester World understands an appointment is expected to be made early next week, ahead of the derby with Man City.

The Red Devils have already held talks with Carrick and are expected to speak with Solskjaer next. Both United figures have held managerial positions at the club in recent years, with Solskjaer becoming a permanent fixture in 2019, following his interim period after Jose Mourinho’s departure.

Carrick stepped in as caretaker manager to replace Solskjaer in 2021 after the Norwegian left the club. Both men are heavily linked with the temporary role at United but a fresh report claims the duo are unlikely to return to Old Trafford to work together. Sky Sports has reported that the club feel the two former players and managers work better on an independent basis.
