‘World-class’ manager ‘heavy favourite’ to become next permanent Man Utd manager - report

Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner has reportedly emerged as the leading candidate to become the next permanent Manchester United manager, according to CaughtOffside.

The Old Trafford side are in the process of hiring an interim head coach following Ruben Amorim’s sacking on Monday, with talks ongoing with both Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Michael Carrick.

United are likely to move for a permanent appointment after the season and Glasner is believed to be highly regarded at the club for his impressive two years at Selhurst Park.

The Austrian tactician has yet to pen a new contract with Palace, with his current deal expiring in June.

According to CaughtOffside, United chiefs are particularly keen on appointing Glasner after the season, with some even considering the 51-year-old a ‘heavy favourite’ for the role.

The Old Trafford hierarchy have reportedly been very impressed with Glasner’s work at Palace, whom he led to their first-ever major trophy by lifting the FA Cup last season.

The Eagles also lifted the Community Shield in August and finished 10th and 12th in the Premier League under the 'world-class' Austrian manager.

Glasner has been vocal about his frustrations at Palace this season, particularly over the club’s transfer activity, following a quiet summer that saw only three players arrive for a transfer fee.

Palace have been active early in January to try to satisfy Glasner’s demands, welcoming forward Brennan Johnson from Tottenham in a club-record £35m deal.

The Eagles have failed to win their last six Premier League games under Glasner and sit 13th after 21 matches, four points off Man United in seventh.

Solskjaer Leading Candidate for Caretaker Role

Solskjaer is believed to be a leading candidate to take over at Old Trafford until the end of the season, more than four years after his sacking in November 2021.

The 52-year-old is available after departing Turkish side Besiktas in August and is believed to have offered his services to United after Amorim was relieved of his duties on Monday.

Solskjaer is expected to hold face-to-face talks with United chiefs over the weekend, while Carrick is seen as another potential option.

The former midfielder could also become Solskjaer’s assistant at Old Trafford if he misses out on the interim role.

Romano Expects Man Utd to Target De Zerbi

GIVEMESPORT senior correspondent Fabrizio Romano believes Man United could return for both Roberto De Zerbi and Thomas Tuchel in their search for Amorim’s permanent successor.

The Old Trafford side considered both managers in the summer of 2024, before sacking Erik ten Hag, and hold both in high regard as they aim to appoint a Premier League-proven tactician.
